Nadia creates a career in caring and connection

For Nadia Al-Halaby, nursing is more than a profession - it’s a way to make a difference in people’s lives every day.

“My journey into healthcare started in 2023 when I studied a Certificate III in Individual Support (CHC33021) at TAFE Queensland,” Nadia said.

“That sparked something in me, and I realised how much I loved caring for and connecting with people during some of their most vulnerable moments.”

After graduating, Nadia began working as an Assistant in Nursing at St Vincent’s Care Services, where she supported residents with their daily needs.

But she knew she wanted to go further.

“Studying nursing felt like the natural next step. I enjoyed my time as an Assistant In Nursing, but I wanted to take on greater responsibility, develop my clinical skills, and provide a higher level of care. TAFE Queensland’s Diploma of Nursing (HLT54121) gave me that pathway.”

The course wasn’t always easy, but Nadia found the support of her teachers and classmates invaluable.

“My teachers were amazing - they gave clear feedback, encouraged us to ask questions, and built my confidence in clinical practice.”

“My classmates were just as important. We studied together, supported each other on placements, and shared resources. The teamwork reminded me we were all working towards the same goal.”

For Nadia, the highlight of the diploma was applying her learning in real-world environments.

“Clinical placements gave me the confidence that nursing is where I belong. I also loved learning practical skills in the labs – TAFE Queensland’s facilities felt just like real healthcare settings and helped me feel prepared before stepping into hospitals and aged care,” she explained.

What surprised her most, though, was how much she grew as a person.

“I thought it would just be about learning skills, but it was also about critical thinking, teamwork, and communication.”

“I even enjoyed subjects I thought would be challenging, like anatomy and pathophysiology, because they helped me understand the ‘why’ behind nursing.”

Graduating with her Diploma of Nursing was a proud moment for Nadia, and she shared her gratitude at the ceremony, where she was selected as Graduate of the Year.

“This program gave my graduating class and me a new direction and a strong foundation for our futures in healthcare. The support, amazing facilities and industry-standard equipment we learned with made such a difference,” she said.

Now, Nadia is continuing her studies with a Bachelor of Nursing at university and dreams of working in acute and diverse clinical environments.

“Studying at TAFE and completing my Diploma has been such a rewarding experience, and it's confirmed that I want to build a long-term nursing career.”

“Over time, I’d love to specialise in mental health or surgical nursing, where I can combine my clinical knowledge with compassionate care.”

“I’m excited to take the next step, put what I have learned into practice, and continue growing as a nurse so I can continue to make a difference in people’s lives every day,” concluded Nadia.
