New Brisbane Heat Partnership Launches Diploma of Project Management in Elite Sport
TAFE Queensland has extended its education offerings with Queensland Cricket and the Brisbane Heat to deliver a cutting-edge Diploma of Project Management (BSB50820), giving aspiring professionals a pathway into the fast-paced world of sport, events, and business operations.
Launching in early October 2025, the nationally recognised qualification is designed for those looking to build their expertise in planning, executing, and leading complex projects – from game-day activations and sponsorship campaigns to community programs and high-performance operations.
Project management: essential to elite sporting events
Delivering high-profile sporting events such as Big Bash League matches requires meticulous planning and seamless execution behind the scenes. From coordinating multiple stakeholders – including sponsors, broadcasters, athletes and fans – to managing budgets, risks and operational timelines, project management is at the heart of every successful event.
Queensland Cricket CEO Terry Svenson said the partnership reflected the organisation’s commitment to developing pathways for people who want to contribute to the game off the field.
“Running Big Bash matches and major cricket events is a huge logistical exercise – it takes exceptional project management to deliver world-class experiences for our fans, partners and players. This program will give participants unique insights into how we plan, prepare and execute these events, while building the next generation of leaders in sport and events.”
Flexible online delivery with real-world impact
The 22-week program will be delivered entirely online through evening classes, catering to full-time professionals, athletes, and career changers seeking to upskill without interrupting their work commitments. Classes will run twice weekly from 6–9 pm, supported by Saturday intensives at iconic Queensland Cricket headquarters at Allan Border Field.
Students will also tackle real-world project briefs provided by Brisbane Heat, simulating challenges like fan engagement strategies, crisis response scenarios, and major event planning.
Industry insights from the Brisbane Heat
The program offers exclusive access to Brisbane Heat and Queensland Cricket professionals through guest lectures, project presentations, and networking opportunities. Students will gain insight into how elite sporting organisations deliver major projects, manage stakeholders, and create unforgettable fan experiences.
TAFE Queensland Manager of Academy of Sport Partnerships Don Harley said the course provides unparalleled access to one of Australia’s most exciting sporting brands.
“We know project management is one of the most transferable skills in the modern workforce, and this course takes it to another level by embedding it in the context of elite sport. Through real-world briefs, guest speakers and on-site intensives, students will graduate job-ready – whether they’re aspiring to work in professional sport, major events, or the wider business community.”
A new pathway into sport and events careers or professional development
Graduates will emerge with skills in scope, time, and cost management, risk assessment, stakeholder engagement, and team leadership – capabilities sought after across sport, events, and business industries. The accelerated structure also allows students to complete the qualification ahead of the Big Bash League pre-season or university Semester 1.
The program is subsidised for eligible students under Queensland Government initiatives, removing financial barriers and broadening access to this unique career pathway.
