Olivia’s passion takes her from the farm to animal care

Growing up surrounded by cows, horses, goats, chickens, dogs and cats, it’s no surprise Olivia Cross always knew she wanted to work with animals.

Now studying a Certificate III in Animal Care Services (ACM30122) at TAFE Queensland’s Loganlea campus, she’s turning that lifelong love into a rewarding career.

“Since I was about eight years old, I’ve always told my mum and dad that I wanted to be a vet,” Olivia said.

“But after doing work experience and seeing surgeries up close, I realised I’d rather focus on caring for animals as a vet nurse - it’s where my heart is.”

Before starting her current course, Olivia completed a Certificate II in Animal Care (ACM20121) at the same campus.

Encouraged by supportive teachers who helped her explore pathways, she continued her studies and hasn’t looked back.

“I’m really enjoying it so far, because I’m learn so many interesting things that you wouldn’t think make such a difference in a veterinary clinic or animal welfare environment.”

For Olivia, TAFE Queensland’s hands-on approach in an adult learning environment has made all the difference.

“It’s more laid back than high school, and it’s perfect for someone who doesn’t enjoy being in a traditional classroom,” she said.

“The teachers are amazing; if you’re struggling, they’ll check in, email you, and help point you in the right direction.”

“They treat you like an adult and genuinely care about your learning, which keeps you coming to class because they make you feel welcome.”

The Loganlea campus offers state-of-the-art facilities for animal care students, something Olivia says mirrors what she sees in real industry settings.

“The kennel room is just like what you’d find in a vet clinic, and the grooming and bathing areas use industry-standard products and equipment,” she said.

“It’s also amazing to study alongside people who share my passion for animals - we connect instantly, learn from each other, and inspire one another in each class.”

Her studies show Olivia and her class participating in Dog Grooming Days in the Loganlea campus’ hydrobath rooms.

Dog owners book an appointment via phone or email with the receptionist for a 45–60-minute grooming session, costing just $10.

When they arrive, owners are greeted by the friendly reception team, who complete a short form outlining their pet’s details and preferred services.

Once checked in, dogs enjoy a wash that includes shampooing, rinsing, and conditioning to keep the coat clean and soft.

Nail trims are always done after the bath when the warm water has softened the nails, making the process easier and more comfortable for the dog.

“If a dog isn’t comfortable with the hydrobath, we use a handheld shower head instead. Our hydrobath rooms have everything we need to ensure they’re as calm and comfortable as possible,” Olivia explained.

“If they’ve got longer coats, we use a shammy to soak up the water, then blow-dry and brush them out to ensure no knots.”

“Every dog leaves the salon looking - and feeling – great. They even get a dog chew or toy, which is a nice way to end their visit, and owners are always happy when they pick up their pets.”

Olivia's life revolves around animals when she’s not studying or working, which sees her helping care for her family’s four horses and plans to start hatching her chickens.

“My mum called me crazy because I said I wanted to get an incubator for my chickens. But I told her, ‘I’ll find the time!’”

Looking ahead, Olivia plans to take a year after finishing her Certificate III to gain more hands-on experience before moving on to a Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing (ACM40418).

“I want to broaden my experience working in kennels and get to know different dog breeds and temperaments, then I’ll be ready to return to TAFE Queensland and take that next step,” concluded Olivia.
