TAFE Queensland partnership delivers career-focused pathways
TAFE Queensland’s partnership with the International Baccalaureate and Brisbane South State Secondary College is helping students prepare for their futures during their high school studies.
In 2025, Brisbane South State Secondary College (BSSSC) introduced the globally recognised International Baccalaureate (IB) Career-related Programme (CP) - an education framework for 16 to 19-year-old students.
The program blends academic study with hands-on, industry-relevant training, helping students build theoretical knowledge and practical skills. TAFE Queensland is at the centre of the initiative, in its role as a career-related study (CRS Provider).
TAFE Queensland supports BSSSC by delivering the CRS component as a strategic partner, while the IB provides overarching guidance and expertise to implement the complete CP framework.
Through the CRS, students earn nationally recognised Certificate II, III and IV to Diploma qualifications from TAFE Queensland during their high school studies.
Studying with TAFE Queensland gives students access to hands-on training and education, getting real-world insights and job-ready skills for various career pathways from the state's largest and most experienced vocational training provider.
With a TAFE Queensland qualification embedded in their secondary schooling, students graduate from high school with clear pathways.
Upon graduation, students can enter employment, take on an apprenticeship, or enrol into higher education, with completed TAFE Queensland qualifications contributing to their Australian Tertiary Admission Rank.
The CP stands apart from traditional academic pathways by combining IB Diploma Programme (DP) courses, a core CP curriculum, and a career-related study.
This structure supports academic rigour and practical experience, helping students develop skills in critical thinking, communication, and global citizenship alongside job-readiness.
While the program has been piloted at BSSSC, the long-term opportunity is far broader for schools wanting to integrate practical vocational training that aligns with today’s industry demands.
With over 150 IB schools across Australia and over 5,000 internationally, TAFE Queensland is well-positioned to partner with more schools.
There is also potential to extend the program into other study areas offered by TAFE Queensland, including engineering, sport, and digital design, to meet the evolving needs of students across various industries.
Through this partnership, TAFE Queensland is shaping more skilled, adaptable, and qualified high school graduates, ready to succeed in the real world.
