The class project that became award-winning
Belinda Survilla, a talented student from TAFE Queensland’s Coomera Creative campus has won the Student Design category at the Building Designers Association of Australia (BDAA) 2025 Awards for her innovative ‘Tiny Home’ project.
This achievement highlights how far she’s come from studying the Certificate IV in Residential Drafting (CPP40121) to advancing her skills through the Diploma of Building Design (CPP50921).
“I am beyond proud and honestly a little stunned,” Belinda said.
“The other finalists were absolutely incredible, so when they called my name, I was genuinely shocked. It’s such an honour to be recognised nationally.”
Her award-winning design, created as part of her building design studies at TAFE Queensland, focused on a series of tiny homes for young people facing homelessness.
Developed through a real-world collaboration with GC Youth Outreach, the project involved designing relocatable homes and a communal area, creating a micro-village where residents could live, learn and connect.
Belinda’s design centered on creating a sense of home and belonging, ensuring the spaces were both functional and welcoming.
“To work on a project that directly impacts young people’s lives was incredibly meaningful,” Belinda said.
“Being able to design spaces that provide safety, comfort and a sense of community, makes everything we do as designers worthwhile.”
Ater working as an interior designer nearly two decades ago, she returned to study to upskill in drafting and building design hoping to re-enter the industry.
Balancing family life, a small business and full-time study presented challenges, but she credits her teachers, classmates and the collaborative environment at the Coomera Creative campus for helping her succeed.
“While I enjoy and work effectively online, going into campus takes the experience to the next level. Being able to collaborate with other students and present work and receive feedback on that work is invaluable,” she said.
She also praised the support of her teachers, noting the guidance and inspiration she received helped her develop both skills and confidence.
As she prepares to graduate, Belinda is eager to enter the industry as a Building Designer.
“I’m excited to hit the ground running, learn from the best and bring fresh ideas to life,” she said.
“Feeling so grateful, inspired and ready for what’s next!”
