Automotive apprentice wins student bursary
Zonta club empowering Bundaberg women in the trades
Automotive electrical apprentice Danielle English has been awarded The Zonta Club of Bundaberg’s TAFE Queensland Student Bursary, recognising her commitment to building a career in a traditionally male-dominated trade.
Danielle, a Certificate III in Automotive Electrical Technology (AUR30320) student at TAFE Queensland and auto electrician apprentice at Bundaberg Regional Council, received the $500 bursary to help cover training costs including tools, resources, workwear and other study-related expenses.
Danielle said she was drawn to automotive electrical work because it combined practical skills with problem-solving.
“I’ve always preferred hands-on work and figuring out how things work rather than just sitting behind a desk,” Danielle said.
“Auto electrical stood out to me because it’s not just mechanical, it’s about thinking through problems and finding faults. Being a woman in the trade just makes me more determined to succeed and show that anyone can do this job if they’re passionate about it.”
Danielle said she hoped to one day start her own business specialising in custom canopy setups, drift cars, four-wheel drives and caravan setups, while building a reputation for quality and attention to detail.
“I also think getting a second trade as a residential electrician would be valuable, as it would broaden my skills, open more opportunities, and give me more flexibility in my career,” she said.
The bursary, which began in 2023, is offered each semester to a female TAFE Queensland student in the Bundaberg region who is pursuing education, training and employment in a non-traditionally female field such as automotive, electrical, engineering, building and construction, agriculture, horticulture, cookery or information technology.
Zonta International is dedicated to achieving gender equality in education and supports awards for women and girls pursuing education and careers in traditionally male-dominated fields.
Zonta Club of Bundaberg Immediate Past President Jenny Maier said the local bursary reflected the club’s commitment to supporting women and girls to access education and create independent futures.
“Zonta works closely with organisations that support women and girls, and this bursary is one practical way we can help women gain skills, confidence and financial independence,” Jenny said.
“We know there are still barriers for women entering some trade areas, and we want to encourage students like Danielle to continue with their studies and establish themselves in rewarding careers.
“Each application is considered with great care, and every applicant is worthy.”
Past bursary recipients have included TAFE Queensland students and graduates in cookery, plumbing, horticulture and conservation, with the funding helping recipients cover study-related costs and continue progressing towards their goals.
The bursary makes a meaningful difference for students pursuing pathways where women remain under-represented.
The opportunities Zonta provides through this bursary make a real difference encourages more women to consider training and careers in trades.”
Danielle completed her training through the Free Apprenticeships for Under 25s program, which provides subsidised training for eligible priority areas including automotive, agriculture and horticulture, building and construction, beauty and hairdressing.
Eligible students are encouraged to watch for future opportunities supporting women in non-traditional fields.
