Clare’s dream career move
After two decades working in pharmacy, Clare Stone made a life-changing decision: to step away from her career and pursue a long-held dream.
“I've always wanted to be a nurse,” said Clare.
“Now things are done online, it was just so much easier for me to be able to do it.”
“A big change - but one I've always wanted to do.”
That decision set her on a new path.
Despite living hours away, Clare enrolled in the Diploma of Nursing (HLT54121) at TAFE Queensland’s Southport campus, drawn to its state-of-the-art facilities and simulated learning spaces that mirror real hospital settings.
Over 18 months, she balanced online study with travel to the Gold Coast for hands-on practical training blocks.
“TAFE Queensland has nursing labs that are a great learning environment as they are set up like a hospital ward which makes transitioning to the hospital setting easier for students,” she said.
As her course progressed, so did her confidence.
“Through hands-on learning, supportive teachers, and real-world practice, I’ve been able to develop my skills in a safe and encouraging environment,” explained Clare.
“TAFE Queensland has helped me step out of my comfort zone, trust my abilities, and communicate more effectively with others.”
She says a major part of her experience was the guidance she received from her teachers - industry-current registered nurses - who brought years of knowledge and experience into her classes.
“The teachers at TAFE Queensland are wonderful and very approachable,” she said.
“They want you to succeed, and they support you, so you do.”
Clare’s hard work and dedication to her new career path were recognised when she was named Student of the Year.
“Winning the Student of the Year was the icing on the cake for me,” said Clare.
“It represents the effort I’ve put into my studies and the care I aim to give every patient.”
“This recognition inspires me to keep improving and to make a positive difference in the lives of others as I move forward in my career.”
For anyone standing at the edge of a career change, Clare has this advice:
“You were always capable! You just needed to become who you already were, and TAFE Queensland helps you to achieve this,” she said.
