Danial takes IT skills from classroom to community
IT graduate Danial Artani embraced every opportunity to build his skills, test his ability and connect with industry - then used that experience to turn a simple idea into a community-focused digital platform.
From hands-on networking labs and industry placements to WorldSkills competition, Danial made the most of his Diploma of Information Technology (Advanced Networking and Cloud Engineering) (ICT50220), gaining the technical skills, confidence and industry exposure to take his passion beyond the classroom.
That drive led him to create TapSpot, a free interactive map connecting Queenslanders with more than 5,300 public water bubblers, shaded areas and barbecues across Brisbane, Logan, Moreton Bay and the Gold Coast.
His initiative has earned him recognition as a Logan Legend, an interview on ABC Radio Brisbane and a place as a 2026 semi-finalist in the Konica Minolta Career Achievement Award at the 7NEWS Young Achiever Awards Queensland.
Danial’s interest in technology began with a curiosity about how things worked and a knack for helping family members solve technical problems, which saw him choose to study with TAFE Queensland after high school, for its practical pathway into the IT industry.
“I chose TAFE Queensland because of its hands-on, industry-focused approach. I wanted to learn by doing, not just by reading about it,” Danial said.
Through the diploma, he built and configured networks, worked with virtual machines in VMware and developed cloud capability through Amazon Web Services.
An industry placement with Cisco Australia showed him how those skills translate to professional IT environments.
“By the end of the course, I could take a problem, break it down and work through it step by step, whether that was troubleshooting a network or building a solution from scratch,” he said.
“That confidence gave me the push to compete in WorldSkills and build my own project, TapSpot.”
At the WorldSkills IT Network Systems Administration competition, Danial put his training to the test by completing demanding technical tasks under pressure, including configuring Windows Server, Active Directory, disks and storage.
“The most rewarding part was proving to myself I could handle real-world tasks under pressure. My TAFE training gave me the foundations and lab experience to walk in prepared,” he said.
The idea for TapSpot came from another real-world challenge: finding a working water bubbler at a local park.
Danial saw an opportunity to bring scattered council information together in one accessible place, helping people find free water, shade and barbecue facilities without paying or downloading an app.
Using AI-assisted development tools, React, a cloud database and interactive mapping technology, he combined council open data with OpenStreetMap to build the platform independently. His TAFE Queensland training gave him the grounding to work with cloud services, databases, hosting, security and user data.
“I started TapSpot because free water and shade should not be hard to find, especially in a Queensland summer,” Danial said.
TapSpot also invites community members to validate locations and report broken amenities, while Danial works with councils to keep park information accurate and up to date.
Alongside growing TapSpot, Danial is pursuing IT support, networking and cloud infrastructure opportunities, working towards Microsoft Azure certifications and volunteering to gain further hands-on experience.
“TAFE Queensland gave me the technical skills, the industry exposure and the confidence to compete in WorldSkills and build TapSpot. I would not be where I am today without it,” he said.
Danial’s advice to future IT students is simple: embrace every opportunity, apply what you learn and start building before you feel ready.
“Use what you learn in class to solve a problem you care about, even a small one. Projects like that teach you more than anything and they show employers what you can do.”
From the classroom to WorldSkills, industry placements and the launch of TapSpot, Danial’s journey shows what is possible when practical training meets ambition - and when every opportunity becomes a stepping stone from passion to marketplace.
