Danielle finds her teaching future at TAFE Queensland
Danielle Rieley still remembers her first day at TAFE Queensland’s Mt Gravatt campus: a heavy bag, a few nerves and one big question - where was her classroom?
One year later, she stood before her fellow graduates, reflecting on the confidence, skills and opportunities her studies had given her.
After completing the Certificate IV in School Based Education Support (CHC40221), Danielle is now one step closer to her dream of becoming a teacher.
For her, the qualification was more than a certificate. It was the start of a career built around helping students feel supported, confident and included.
Looking back, Danielle remembers sitting in the car park feeling excited, uncertain and ready for something new.
“The moment I stepped into the classroom, I felt a sense of comfort, embraced by curious minds, nervous smiles and the beautiful koalas that sat just outside the window,” Danielle said.
Like many students, Danielle knew that studying would take commitment. There would be barriers, doubt and moments when backing herself felt hard.
But at graduation, she reminded her classmates what they had already proven: they could push through, keep going and achieve more than they once thought possible.
“I am forever grateful to the path that TAFE Queensland has created for me to strive to be the best version of myself I can be,” she explained.
The course also gave Danielle a close-up view of life in the classroom.
Through vocational placement in an approved educational setting, students put their learning into practice and build real-world experience.
They develop skills in supporting literacy and numeracy, assisting students with additional learning needs, working with students with disabilities, and contributing to inclusive learning environments.
For Danielle, placement was a standout.
“I spent many hours at placement where I got to learn from our future leaders of the world,” she said.
In the classroom, she saw “humankind in the purest form”, working alongside neurotypical and neurodivergent students and experiencing the diversity, curiosity and energy that make every classroom unique.
Most importantly, Danielle’s TAFE Queensland experience helped her believe she belonged in education.
With encouragement from her TAFE teachers, she successfully transitioned to university and is now completing her first trimester of further study in education.
“My end goal is to become the kind of teacher that inspires students to build their knowledge and skills while following their passions, like the TAFE teachers that guided and mentored me,” she said.
The Certificate IV also opens doors to roles including teacher aide, education assistant, education support officer and school learning support officer, while providing a pathway into further education studies.
For Danielle, that pathway turned ambition into action.
She chose the course because she wants every child to have someone in their corner - someone to guide them, nurture them and help them get the best possible start in life.
“Diversity is what makes humanity so intriguing,” she said.
Her message is simple: no matter who you are or where you come from, you deserve to feel like you belong.
It’s an inclusive mindset reflected throughout the Certificate IV, where students learn to work with diverse people, support students with additional learning needs and disabilities, understand Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and promote student health, safety and wellbeing.
Danielle knows study can mean late nights, early mornings, looming deadlines and days when the finish line feels far away. But graduating proved the effort was worth it.
Her advice for anyone thinking about taking their own next step comes down to three simple rules.
“Rule one: Be kind. To yourself, to others and especially to the voice in your head that pushes you to be better.”
“Rule two: Have fun. Don't take everything too seriously. Except assignment due dates.”
“Rule three: comes from one of my favourite quotes from Taylor Swift, ‘never be ashamed of trying, effortlessness is a myth,’” she said.
From that nervous first day to her next chapter at university, Danielle’s TAFE Queensland journey has become the launchpad for something bigger.
Now, with the certificate IV complete and confidence growing, she is on her way to becoming the teacher she hopes to be - and to helping create classrooms where every student knows they belong.
