Design is in Alyssa's DNA

For Alyssa Lepp, a career in interior design was always close to home.

“Honestly, I fell into it,” said Alyssa.

“My grandmother was a colour consultant for Dulux in her prime, and we’ve always bounced ideas –  whether renovating around the house or just picking new furniture.”

What began as a shared interest with her grandmother has since grown into the foundation for a new career.

Alyssa is studying a Diploma of Interior Design (MSF50222) at TAFE Queensland's Coomera Creative campus, a journey she’s sharing with her biggest supporter.

“She wants to hear everything I'm doing, see everything that I'm doing. She loves it,” she said.

The diploma blends creativity with hands-on experience, with students like Alyssa learning how to interpret project briefs and turn them into creative interior design concepts.

“It's challenging, it's stressful, but the reward at the end of it - whether it's seeing your finished design on paper, on the computer, or bringing together a physical material board - makes it entirely worthwhile,” said Alyssa.

Although interior design feels like a natural fit for Alyssa, before enrolling, she spent several years building a career in the automotive industry.

“Moving to interior design was a major career adjustment,” she said.

“Straight out of school, I tried my hand at a mechanical apprenticeship and got a couple of years into that before it fell through.”

“Then I moved into automotive part sales with Porsche, which was an incredible experience.”

When the opportunity arose to pursue interior design, Alyssa decided it was time for a new challenge.

“I finished up with them towards the end of last year and then jumped straight into the diploma this year.”

She hasn't looked back.

“I'm loving it.” she said, as she builds the skills to shape her future in the industry.
