Electrician upskilled and powered for recovery for Queensland's extreme weather

Nick completed free battery training to prepare for growing energy and disaster recovery demand.

After seeing first-hand the impact of Queensland's increasingly frequent severe weather events, licensed electrician Nick knew battery storage skills would become more important than ever.

As communities rebuild after storms, floods and other natural disasters, demand for renewable energy and battery replacement systems continues to grow. For Nick, gaining specialised battery storage skills wasn't just about career development. It was about being ready to support customers when they need it most.

To stay ahead of industry demand, Nick recently completed the Grid-Connected Battery Storage Systems Designer-Installer Skill Set (UEESS00191) through the TAFE Centre of Excellence Clean Energy Batteries, with the training fully funded for eligible participants.

Working for a company that undertakes significant insurance and disaster recovery work, Nick has a front-row seat to the changing energy landscape.

"We're seeing more households investing in solar and battery systems, and after major weather events there's often a need to repair or replace damaged systems. It was pretty clear to me that these skills are only going to become more valuable in the years ahead," Nick said.

With only a handful of electricians in his organisation qualified to design and install battery storage systems, Nick saw an opportunity to expand both his capabilities and the services his employer can offer customers.

"For me, it was a chance to broaden my horizons and gain an in-demand qualification. When the training is fully funded, there's really no better time to switch on your learning and get ahead of where the industry is heading."

The decision proved to be an easy one for both Nick and his employer.

"This was a real win-win situation. It hasn't cost me or my employer anything, and we're building skills that we know will be needed in the future. Being able to upskill now means we're getting on the front foot rather than waiting until demand outpaces our capability. When communities are recovering from weather events, having qualified people ready to assist can make a huge difference."

Nick said the funding also helped accelerate the decision to enrol.

"Like many businesses, there are always competing priorities when it comes to training budgets, so having access to funded training made it easy to get the green light."

While Nick was familiar with some battery storage systems through his existing work, he found the practical component of the course particularly valuable.

"I was impressed by the range of systems we were exposed to during the practical training. I'd worked with Class 4 systems before, but I hadn't had much experience with some of the larger and more customised systems. Seeing those up close, understanding how they operate and getting hands-on experience was incredibly worthwhile."

The exposure to different battery technologies and installation scenarios gave Nick a broader understanding of the industry's rapidly evolving landscape.

"The practical component brought everything together. It's one thing to learn the theory, but getting to work with different systems and applications really helps build confidence."

As battery technology continues to evolve and energy storage becomes more common in homes and businesses, Nick believes the need for qualified designers and installers will only continue to grow.

"Batteries are here to stay. In fact, they're only going to become more important as technology develops and energy demands change."

His advice to employers and electricians considering the training is simple: take advantage of the opportunity while it's available.

"The industry is moving quickly, and battery systems are becoming a bigger part of the conversation every year. The sooner you build those skills, the better positioned you'll be for the future."

With a new qualification now under his tool belt, Nick is helping ensure both his career and his employer remain fully charged for the opportunities ahead, proving that when it comes to clean energy, a little upskilling today can generate powerful results tomorrow.
