Free upskilling helps electrician power up his new business

From refrigeration mechanic to licensed electrician, and now a qualified battery storage system designer and installer, Clinton has built a career on continuous learning. As he prepares to launch his own electrical business, he credits TAFE Queensland with helping him stay ahead of the curve and ready for the opportunities emerging in Australia's evolving energy sector.

Clinton has recently completed the Grid-Connected Battery Storage Systems Designer-Installer Skill Set (UEESS00191), delivered through the TAFE Centre of Excellence Clean Energy Batteries and fully funded for eligible participants.

For Clinton, the course is the latest step in a training journey that began years ago. 

"I started out as a refrigeration mechanic through TAFE Queensland and later completed my electrical apprenticeship, so returning for this course felt like a natural next step. Every stage of my career has been built on gaining new skills, and this course has helped me prepare for where the industry is heading," Clinton said.

The intensive four-day course equips licensed electricians with the knowledge and practical skills required to design and install grid-connected battery storage systems. As demand for battery storage and renewable energy solutions continues to grow, Clinton recognised the importance of adding these capabilities to his skill set before switching on his new business venture.

"Battery storage is becoming a much bigger part of the industry, and it's something I expect will be a significant part of my business moving forward. Being able to offer these services from day one really helps future-proof my business and opens the door to new opportunities."

The extensive course content is as Clinton has come to expect from TAFE Queensland, covering everything from system design and compliance requirements through to installation considerations for residential and commercial projects. 

"The scope of the training was comprehensive. I now feel confident designing a complete system from start to finish, from solar generation through to battery storage solutions. Whether it's a residential installation or a larger commercial project, I have a much better understanding of how all the pieces fit together."

For small business owners and sole traders, investing in professional development can often compete with other business costs. Clinton said having access to funded training removed a significant barrier and allowed him to focus on growing his business without adding financial pressure.

"When you're starting a business, there's already a lot to think about, especially when you're supporting a young family at the same time. Not having to worry about the cost of training takes a huge weight off your shoulders," Clinton said. 

"I would have completed the qualification eventually because I knew it was important for my business. But having access to funded training meant I could fast-track those plans, build my skills sooner and start focusing on the next stage of growth."

Clinton believes the course is particularly valuable for electricians looking to expand their services, stay competitive and connect into the evolving energy market. His advice to others considering the training is simple. 

"It's definitely worth it. The industry is changing quickly and the more skills you have, the better positioned you'll be. It's a great opportunity to plug into the future of energy and give your business an extra spark."

With new technical skills, greater confidence and a business launch on the horizon, Clinton is proving that investing in learning can be a powerful way to stay connected to emerging opportunities and keep your career fully charged.
