Hosea goes from player to coach with TAFE Queensland
When Hosea Rewi Jones enrolled in sport coaching through TAFE at School, he was driven by his love of basketball.
What he may not have realised at the time was how valuable those qualifications would become in shaping his future in the sport.
Hosea completed the Certificate II in Sport Coaching (SIS20321) and Certificate III in Sport Coaching (SIS30521) during the inaugural 2024–2025 delivery of the Logan Thunder TAFE at School Program.
Based at Cornubia Park, the program is a partnership between TAFE Queensland and Logan Thunder that equips senior high school basketball players with the skills to succeed on and off the court while creating a pathway into the sports industry.
Delivered through TAFE Queensland’s Academy of Sport, students attend training one day per week during the school term while completing nationally recognised qualifications and gaining credit towards their Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE).
Now, in his first year after finishing school, Hosea has already stepped into leadership roles within the sport.
He has been appointed Head Coach of the Logan Thunder U14 Representative Team and has accepted a coaching role at Anglican Church Grammar School (Churchie).
His move into coaching also reflects resilience. After undergoing two anterior cruciate ligament surgeries in the past 12 months, Hosea has been unable to play while completing rehabilitation.
Rather than stepping away from basketball, he shifted his focus to coaching and leadership.
His father, Byron Jones, said the qualifications helped open the door to these opportunities.
“He has since gone on to become head coach for the Logan Thunder U14 Rep team this season and has accepted a coaching role at Churchie,” Byron said.
“He wouldn’t have been able to achieve these roles without completing these certificates.”
Hosea’s journey highlights how TAFE Queensland’s sport coaching qualifications can create pathways into the industry while helping athletes stay connected to the game in new ways.
With Semester 2 applications opening soon, the TAFE at School sport coaching programs continue to allow students to build practical skills, gain industry insight and explore careers in sport while completing their secondary studies.
