Job security tops the list for electrician Jordan

When licensed electrician Jordan started researching the future of the electrical industry, one thing became crystal clear: clean energy skills are in high demand.

After searching current job listings and seeing the growing demand for accredited battery storage designers and installers, Jordan didn't hesitate to take advantage of the fully funded battery training available through the TAFE Centre of Excellence Clean Energy Batteries.

Already involved in battery and solar installations through his workplace, Jordan knew he wanted to take the next step in his career. Becoming an accredited designer and installer had long been part of his plan, but seeing the industry's demand for qualified professionals really switched the idea from possibility to priority. 

"I could see the demand was there. There are so many opportunities in the clean energy sector, and I wanted to make sure I had the qualifications and knowledge to be part of that growth," Jordan said. 

Jordan recently completed the Grid-Connected Battery Storage Systems Designer-Installer Skill Set (UEESS00191). During his training, it was the design component of the course that really piqued his interest. 

"I was surprised by how much work happens before a single piece of equipment is installed. There's a lot of planning, analysis and consultation that goes into designing the right system for a client."

The course provided Jordan with valuable insight into communication with customers about their energy needs and creating tailored solutions based on their usage patterns and goals.

"You learn how to assess a client's power consumption, identify what they're trying to achieve and then build a solution around that," he said.

A highlight of the course for Jordan was learning how to create data-driven proposals that clearly demonstrate the benefits of a battery storage system. 

"One thing I wasn't expecting was how detailed the design process is and how much information you can provide to customers," he said.

"You can show them exactly what's being generated, what they're consuming and how a battery system could improve their energy usage. Having those numbers and projections helps customers make informed decisions, and it gives you confidence that you're recommending the right solution."

While Jordan already felt comfortable with the hands-on aspects of an installation, he said the course helped fill an important gap in his knowledge.

"I'd learned a lot about installing systems from working alongside experienced electricians, but designing them was a completely different skill set. The training has given me confidence in both areas. I now feel capable of designing systems, presenting solutions to clients and working towards accreditation knowing I've got the knowledge behind me," Jordan said.

Having access to the course at no cost was also a major advantage, with the funded training through the Centre a joint initiative between the Australian and Queensland Governments.

"These types of qualifications can be expensive, so having the training fully funded was a huge incentive. It allowed me to invest in my professional development without worrying about the financial side of it."

For Jordan, however, the value of the course goes beyond career progression. It's also about raising standards and ensuring battery installations are completed safely and correctly. 

"We do a lot of service work and we've been called in to fix a lot of poor-quality work and seeing that has shown me why specialised training is so important. Battery storage systems are complex, and it's clear why this area has its own qualification. I want to make sure every installation I work on is safe, compliant and completed to a high standard."

As Australia's renewable energy transition continues to gain momentum, Jordan believes qualified designers and installers will play an increasingly important role in helping households and businesses get the most out of their energy systems.

For electricians considering expanding into battery storage, his advice is simple. 

"Go for it. The industry is growing rapidly, the demand is there and the skills are incredibly valuable. It's a great way to future-proof your career and give yourself an extra charge in a competitive market."

With new qualifications, greater confidence and skills that are in high demand, Jordan is well positioned to stay connected to the opportunities powering the future of Australia's energy industry.
