Kalani's sound career hits the right note

That course was the Certificate III in Live Production and Technical Services (CUA30425), which enabled Kalani to develop the skills for a behind-the-scenes career in live performance.

"I've always loved live music and theatre and was curious about how everything works behind the scenes," Kalani said.

"The more I read about the course, and how it could give me opportunities to work in the industry, the more I knew I wanted to enrol, and I'm very glad I did."

Now, Kalani is taking the next step in her career as the first graduate from the course to secure an internship with Griffith University's Music Theatre department, thanks to Music and Production Teacher Toby Loveland, connecting her with the industry.

Over four weeks, she'll work on the acclaimed musical “& Juliet” as part of the sound team, gaining invaluable hands-on experience under the guidance of leading sound designer Steve Thornely.

"I was super excited and grateful for the opportunity because I knew I was going to gain lots of hands-on experience and new skills. Even after just a few days working on the production, I had learned so much," she said.

As part of the production team, Kalani is assisting with setting up the band's instruments, testing and fitting microphones to cast members and supporting rehearsals as the show comes together.

For Kalani, the internship is a chance to build on the practical skills she developed at TAFE Queensland while learning from experienced professionals in a real-world theatre environment.

"I'm most looking forward to learning more about the sound console," she said.

"I've worked with a couple of sound consoles at TAFE Queensland, so I'm really keen to learn a different desk. I'm also looking forward to meeting people who work in the industry who can teach me even more about sound."

Kalani's passion for sound production was cemented after seeing “MJ the Musical” and watching the show's lead sound operator at work.

"Watching her precision on the sound console really inspired me and made me want to continue studying and working towards one day having a profession like that."

Throughout her studies, Kalani embraced every opportunity that came her way.

Among her highlights were stage managing the TAFE Queensland Diploma performance showcase at Brisbane's Princess Theatre, touring backstage at MJ the Musical and developing practical skills across live production, including audio, lighting, costume maintenance and multi-camera filming.

"It's incredible to be the first student from the course to complete this internship. I'm proud of the achievement, but I also believe any of my classmates could achieve this too because of what the course has given us,” she said.

Kalani believes the internship will not only strengthen her technical skills but also help establish valuable industry connections.

"It allows me to meet people in the industry, get my name out there and continue building my knowledge of sound production, which I think will really help my career."

"I'd love to work on musicals as a lead sound operator or sound designer."

For anyone considering a career in live production, Kalani has one piece of advice.

"If you're interested, just do it. Say yes to every opportunity. Showing up is key, and it's the reason I'm doing this internship today."

“The course goes by so quickly because every class is so practical, you build great connections with your classmates, learn so much, and the teachers are incredibly knowledgeable," concluded Kalani.
