Lilly designs a new chapter after 50
For Lilly Jia, returning to study has marked the beginning of a new chapter.
“Life doesn’t stop at 50 - it can be the beginning of a new chapter,” said Lilly.
A busy mum with a background in property development and home textile import and export, Lilly has spent years building, renovating, furnishing and styling homes in different countries.
“I’ve always loved creating spaces that are beautiful, functional and comfortable,” she said.
What began as an interest has since become a new career direction.
Lilly is studying a Diploma of Interior Design (MSF50222) at TAFE Queensland’s Coomera Creative campus.
“I wanted to build on my practical experience with professional design knowledge and technical skills, so studying interior design felt like a natural next step,” said Lilly.
The diploma has helped Lilly develop skills in space planning, colour theory, material selection, sustainability, CAD, technical drawing and working with client briefs.
Her favourite assignments have been residential interior design projects.
“I really enjoy taking a project from the initial concept through to colour schemes, furniture and material selections, floor plans and presentation boards,” she said.
“Seeing an idea gradually develop into a complete design solution is probably the part I enjoy most.”
Returning to study while balancing family and everyday life has not always been easy, particularly after many years away from the classroom.
“At first, learning new design software and technical drawing felt overwhelming,” said Lilly.
“I just kept practising, asking questions and giving myself time to learn.”
Lilly said support from her teachers and classmates helped her through the difficult moments and gave her the confidence to continue.
After graduating, she hopes to work part-time as an interior designer or consultant, or combine her new skills with her experience in property development.
She would also like to start her own interior design business in the future.
“It’s never too late to learn something new, challenge yourself and follow your dreams,” said Lilly.
“Sometimes you just have to take that first step.”
