Meet Rusty, helping drive the Southern Down’s future automotive workforce
With more than two decades of industry experience across light and heavy vehicle, agricultural machinery and mobile plant trades, Rusty Pierini is passionate about helping the next generation of automotive apprentices build the practical skills and confidence needed for successful careers in the industry.
Based at TAFE Queensland's Warwick campus, Rusty shares his extensive industry knowledge with apprentices training across a range of automotive sectors, helping them develop the capabilities employers need in today's workplaces.
Before becoming an educator, Rusty worked as a light vehicle technician before moving into the heavy vehicle, agricultural and mobile plant sectors.
Throughout his career he worked on the tools, supported customers, helped manage business operations and trained apprentices in the workplace.
"Before I started teaching, I was in the trade for about 22 years," Rusty said.
"I started off as a light vehicle technician originally and then moved into the agricultural and mobile plant side of the industry."
A born-and-bred Southern Downs local, Rusty understands the important role skilled tradespeople play in supporting the region's agricultural, transport and mechanical industries.
Drawing his industry experience, Rusty delivers hands-on training that reflects current workplace practices while helping apprentices build confidence in their technical abilities and problem-solving skills.
For Rusty, one of the most rewarding aspects of teaching is seeing apprentices develop their skills and understanding throughout their training journey.
"The biggest joy I get is seeing the lights come on," Rusty said.
"When you're trying to get a concept across and then they finally get it, that's the biggest buzz."
Seeing apprentices progress from their first year through to qualification remains a highlight of his role.
"When they get to fourth year, you can really see the lights come on," he said.
"When you meet them later in life and they still remember you, that's great!”
A key strength of training at the Warwick campus, according to Rusty, is the opportunity for apprentices from different employers and industries from across the Southern Downs and wider South West Queensland region to learn alongside one another.
"One of the real benefits of bringing apprentices together at the Warwick campus from different workplaces for block training weeks is the opportunity to share experiences and learn from one another," he said.
"Those conversations are gold because everyone brings a different perspective and way of doing things."
The Warwick campus features a fully equipped automotive workshop and delivers training aligned with the needs of the region's agricultural, transport and mechanical industries.
Apprentices travel from across the Darling Downs and South West Queensland to complete training at the campus, which supports light vehicle, heavy vehicle, agricultural and mobile plant trade training.
Rusty believes dedicated training away from the workplace provides valuable opportunities for apprentices to focus on learning, collaborate with their peers and gain exposure to different experiences across the industry.
"I firmly believe that students need time away from the workplace to complete the theory aspects of their training," he said.
"When they're here, they've got our full attention, and we've got theirs."
The Warwick campus features a fully equipped automotive workshop and delivers training aligned with the needs of the region's agricultural, transport and mechanical industries.
Rusty together with the light and heavy automotive training team at the Warwick campus, deliver a broad range of qualifications to both high school students and apprentices.
Training includes the Certificate II in Auto Electrical Technology (AUR20420) pre-apprenticeship course for TAFE at School students and the Certificate II in Automotive Air Conditioning Technology (AUR20220) for mechanics seeking to gain their automotive refrigerant handling licence.
Apprenticeship trade training includes the Certificate III in Mobile Plant Technology (AUR31220), Certificate III in Trailer Technology (AUR31820), Certificate III in Heavy Commercial Vehicle Mechanical Technology (AUR31120), Certificate III in Agricultural Mechanical Technology (AUR30420) and Certificate III in Light Vehicle Mechanical Technology (AUR30620).
