New EN swaps beaches for the outback

After five years of surf, sand and sunshine on the Gold Coast, the Diploma of Nursing (HLT54121) graduate is packing his bags and preparing to relocate to Winton, around 1,150 kilometres west of Brisbane.

For Trevor, the move is more than a change of scenery - it’s the beginning of a new career and a chance to make a difference in a community where his skills are needed.

“Out there, they just take you straight under their wing. You’ve come to serve their community and they love that,” said Trevor.

Trevor is no stranger to rural and remote environments.

He began his working life as a wedding photographer before spending more than a decade as a rural and remote radio technician, travelling to isolated locations and working in challenging conditions.

Now, he feels he has found where he belongs.

 “I've had a few careers, but haven't really found satisfaction in them,” he said.

“I'm like, ‘why didn't I do this earlier?’ But there's no point in looking back like that.”

“This just feels natural to me, and I wanted to be in a role where I was needed.”

Nursing is a profession that runs in Trevor’s blood.

“I come from a family of nurses. My mum was a nurse; she’s still working at 72. My brother is a mental health nurse,” said Trevor.  

When it came time to choose where to study, Trevor turned to his family for advice.

“I was talking to my mum about it, who is a practising nurse. TAFE Queensland students have a reputation for being ready to nurse,” he said.

Trevor said the support and feedback he received from his teachers and peers at TAFE Queensland’s Southport campus helped build his confidence and prepare him for life as a nurse.

Now, with his nursing diploma complete and a new role waiting for him in Winton, Trevor is ready to take the next step.

“I’m ready to nurse.”
