Penny inspires the next generation of dental prosthetists
More than 20 years after first studying at TAFE Queensland, dental prosthetist Penny Brady has returned to the classroom - this time as a lecturer helping students build the skills and confidence to transform lives.
Penny first began her journey with TAFE Queensland in 2005, completing a Diploma of Dental Technology (HLT55118) at the former Kangaroo Point campus before returning in 2011 and 2012 to complete her Advanced Diploma of Dental Prosthetics.
Now, she is sharing her industry experience with the next generation of students as a lecturer and clinical demonstrator in the Bachelor of Dental Prosthetics (HED004).
Her pathway into the profession began unexpectedly.
After initially pursuing an international business degree and working in hospitality abroad, Penny returned home and joined her family’s business, Bromley’s Denture Clinic.
What started as a job opportunity soon became a rewarding career that she is passionate about.
“Dental Prosthetics suits my creative side and my love of working with my hands,” Penny said.
“As I moved from the laboratory side into clinical work, I discovered how much I enjoyed working with people and helping improve their confidence and quality of life.”
Penny said one of the most rewarding aspects of the profession is seeing the difference a new smile can make.
“You get to help people every day and genuinely change their lives,” she said.
“No two people are the same, and that means every set of dentures is unique. It’s about understanding the person as much as the technical work.”
Reflecting on her own student experience, Penny said the support of her teachers and access to industry-standard facilities helped prepare her for a seamless transition into the workforce.
“The teachers were fantastic and always encouraged us to keep learning and connect with the industry,” she said.
“The facilities were very much aligned with what we were using in practice, which made the transition into work really straightforward.”
Penny also values the professional networks she built during her studies, many of which have continued for more than two decades.
“It really became a professional community that you can still rely on throughout your career.”
Now back at TAFE Queensland as a Clinical Demonstrator, Penny supports students across both theory and clinical learning, including supervising student treatment sessions with members of the public at TAFE Queensland's South Bank campus Denture Clinic.
She said seeing students grow in confidence while making a real difference for patients is one of the highlights of her role.
“You see patients who may have gone years without teeth leave with a new smile and renewed confidence,” she said.
“It’s life-changing for them, and for the students, it reinforces that this profession is about caring for the whole person, not just the patient's mouth.”
Penny said TAFE Queensland’s direct-entry Bachelor of Dental Prosthetics offers students a valuable pathway into a high-demand industry.
“Students can move directly into the degree and, once they graduate, register to practise clinically. It’s a fantastic pathway into an incredibly rewarding profession,” she said.
With strong demand for qualified dental prosthetists, Penny encourages anyone considering the industry to explore the opportunities available.
“There are so many career opportunities out there, in a profession that combines technical skill, creativity and genuine human impact,” she said.
For Penny, returning to TAFE Queensland as a teacher is a meaningful full-circle moment.
“It’s incredibly rewarding to now help students start the same journey that shaped my own career,” concluded Penny.
