Resilience and compassion drive Tavanah’s success in veterinary nursing

For Tavanah McGee, a career in veterinary nursing is more than a job, it’s the fulfilment of a lifelong connection with animals and a powerful personal achievement shaped by resilience, determination and purpose.

After graduating from her Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing (ACM40418) through TAFE Queensland in December 2025, Tavanah has stepped confidently into the workforce as a veterinary nurse.

She completed her industry placement at VetLove Toowoomba, where she gained valuable hands‑on experience and lead to an employment opportunity, while also holding a role at Pittsworth Vet Surgery. Together, these roles allow her to apply her skills daily in busy clinical environments and provide compassionate care to animals and their owners across both practices.

Tavanah’s journey into the veterinary profession was not a straightforward one.

Growing up without a stable family environment and becoming independent at a young age, she developed resilience, determination and a strong sense of self‑belief.

“Returning to study was a significant milestone for me,” Tavanah said.

“Vocational education didn’t just give me a qualification, it gave me confidence, direction and a future I’m proud of.”

Driven by a lifelong love for animals and the comfort they provided during challenging periods of her life, Tavanah chose to pursue veterinary nursing as a way to make a meaningful difference every day.

Through TAFE Queensland, she completed a Certificate III in Animal Care Services (ACM30122) followed by a Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing (ACM40418) at the Toowoomba campus, developing strong theoretical knowledge alongside extensive hands‑on clinical experience. The real‑world focus of her training ensured she was well prepared for employment and confident entering the workforce.

Now employed as a veterinary nurse, Tavanah brings a caring and empathetic approach to every aspect of her role. She understands the strong emotional bond between pets and their owners and takes pride in providing reassurance, clear communication and kindness — particularly in high‑stress situations.

“I treat every animal as if they were my own,” she says.

Her reliability, strong work ethic and willingness to learn made an immediate impact in the workplace and led to employment while she was still completing her studies.

Tavanah thrives in a team environment and values the collaborative nature of veterinary nursing, where trust, communication and shared responsibility are key to providing high‑quality care.

Tavanah is also passionate about representing vocational education as a pathway that creates genuine opportunity, industry‑ready skills and meaningful careers.

“I’m proud of how far I’ve come,” Tavanah said.

“TAFE Queensland gave me the skills, confidence and stability to build a future I’m excited about.”

Tavanah’s dedication to her studies and consistently high performance were recognised at TAFE Queensland’s Toowoomba Graduation Ceremony in March 2026, where she was awarded the Academic Excellence – Faculty of Agrifood, Technology and Transport Award as well as the Bob Walker Memorial Award.

These awards recognised not only her academic results, but also her professionalism, work ethic and commitment to excellence throughout her training in front of her peers, teachers special guests family and friends.

In further recognition of her commitment, professionalism and academic excellence, TAFE Queensland nominated Tavanah for the Queensland Training Awards VET Student of the Year.

Tavanah put the skills she learnt at TAFE Queensland into practice during her VET nursing placement at VetLove Toowoomba.
