Course overview

Designed for both emerging and experienced leaders, this course supports you to confidently lead people, improve service delivery and drive meaningful projects across community organisations, community centres, hospitals, aged care facilities and other healthcare settings. You’ll develop practical skills to plan and monitor services, manage people and performance, oversee risk management, and contribute to continuous improvement, preparing you to take on leadership of programs, projects or broader management responsibilities. This qualification reflects the role of managers who operate with a high level of autonomy and work effectively with senior leaders, directors and boards.

To strengthen workforce capability, this training is funded through the TAFE Centre of Excellence Health Care and Support, enabling existing workers to progress their leadership and management goals. Throughout this course you’ll be supported through culturally safe, workplace-embedded learning and mentoring. Successful completion of this qualification prepares you for career advancement and provides pathways to pursue leadership or broader management responsibilities within community‑based organisations, hospitals, aged care facilities and other healthcare settings.

The Centre is delivering a free Advanced Diploma of Community Sector Management (CHC62015) within a workplace‑integrated model, supporting industry to address critical leadership and management skill gaps across the health care and support sectors. This pilot strengthens workforce capability by enabling existing workers, particularly from priority and regional cohorts to transition into leadership roles through practical, mentored, and culturally safe learning embedded in real workplace contexts.

Selection criteria

You must be:

  • Currently employed in the aged care, disability, allied health, mental health, or nursing sector
  • Supported by a supervisor or manager as an emerging or new leader
  • Living and working in regional, rural, or remote North or Far North Queensland

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are strongly encouraged to apply.

Resources required

It is recommended that you have access to a reliable internet connection to access TAFE Queensland's online learning system Connect, and a computer with up-to-date software, including Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat Reader. This equipment and software is available for use at all TAFE Queensland locations.

Access to workplace policies and processes in order to support your understanding of working in a leadership/ management role.

Important information

Virtual classrooms
Virtual classes are delivered online via Zoom, according to a scheduled timetable. This format allows you to engage with fellow students and high-quality educators from a location that suits you. You will also be expected to complete additional self-directed study to meet the course requirements.

All virtual classroom sessions are recorded and stored in Connect, the TAFE Queensland learning management system. You can revisit these recordings at any time throughout your study journey.

Drop in sessions
Virtual drop in sessions are held online through Zoom according to a scheduled timetable. This format allows you to connect with fellow students and experienced educators from a location that suits you.

These sessions do not include structured course content. Instead, they provide an opportunity for you to ask questions, seek clarification, or discuss assessment tasks with the educator or with other students.

Face to face workshops
Face to face workshops provide you the opportunity to engage directly with fellow students, educator, guest speakers, mentors, and other TAFE Queensland support staff.

Travel & accommodation
You will be required to travel to the Cairns campus once per term to attend a two (2) day face to face workshop. You will be supported by a dedicated ‘travel team’ located in TAFE Queensland North Region to coordinate travel and accommodation requirements. You will not be required to cover any accommodation or travel expenses incurred.

Mentor support program
You are encouraged to participate in the Mentor Program to support learning throughout the program. Mentors provide guidance with workplace‑based projects and leadership development in a culturally safe and respectful way, supporting confidence, capability and success in the workplace.

You may nominate an existing mentor or identify a preferred mentor to provide support during training. Where no preference is indicated, a suitable mentor will be identified. Nominated mentors will be contacted, and applicants are encouraged to discuss the program with their mentor and confirm their willingness to participate prior to submitting an application.

Assessment methods

Skill and knowledge assessments are an essential step in progressing through your course. You may be assessed in a number of ways while you are studying at TAFE Queensland, including observation, written assessment, questioning, portfolios, work samples, third-party feedback, and through recognition of prior learning.
