Course overview

Prepare for your career in the light automotive and marine industries with this entry-level course. This qualification will give you the basic skills and knowledge needed to pursue an automotive or marine mechanical apprenticeship.

According to the Australian Government's Job Outlook service, demand for qualified mechanics grew strongly over the past five years with employers finding it hard to fill vacancies. Job openings are expected to remain steady in the near future with around 23,000 job opening expected over the next five years.

In this course you will gain the basic skills and knowledge required to carry out workplace tasks safely and effectively. You will become familiar with electrical and mechanical components and systems and learn how to use appropriate tools and equipment to complete basic removal, inspection and refitting of automotive, outboard, inboard and jet ski components.

This course will set you on the path to finding an apprenticeship in a wide range of automotive occupations including a light or heavy vehicle mechanic, or within marine mechanical workshops specialising in light and heavy diesel marine engines.

Resources required

You are responsible for meeting the minimum occupational health and safety requirements in practical classes including protective footwear with covered uppers and steel capped toes and 100% cotton drill industry-standard protective clothing (no singlets).  If you do not meet these minimum standards of dress, you will not be permitted entry into practical classes. Students are also required to bring personal stationery and a USB.

You will be provided with a recommended reading list and/or required textbooks after enrolment, during orientation or at the start of each unit. The purchase of these resources may incur additional costs, or you may be able to borrow them from the TAFE Queensland library network.

You are also required to have access to and bring personal stationery, a USB, and a calculator.

Placement

There are no formal vocational placement requirements for this qualification. However, we encourage you to consider completing work experience in a trades environment specific to your course to develop your practical skills, engage with the industry, and increase future employment opportunities. TAFE Queensland may be able to assist in finding work experience placements.

Please note: Work experience is not available at our South West locations.

Assessment Methods

Skill and knowledge assessments are an essential step in progressing through your course. You may be assessed in a number of ways while you are studying at TAFE Queensland, including observation, written assessment, questioning, portfolios, work samples, third-party feedback, and through recognition of prior learning.
