Expand your skills and get qualified in hazardous areas. Take your career further in the mining sector with this technical qualification. Employers are looking for workers with broad-based and technical skills across many industry areas.

This course will develop your skills and knowledge in hazardous areas. It covers hazards, protection techniques, testing and inspection of explosion-protected equipment. You'll also apply your knowledge to systems for control and monitoring of plant and processes.

Completion of this post trade course will provide you with the opportunity to work in the field of hazardous areas - electrical equipment as a qualified technician (special class).

Course outcome:

Students with a current unrestricted Electrical Licence:  On successful completion of all the units listed below, students will under take a RPL assessment and Gap Training if required for all Core Electrical Units and maybe eligible for UEE42611 - Certificate IV in Hazardous areas - Electrical.


Students who do not hold a current unrestricted Electrical Licence:  Students will not obtain the full qualification but will receive a Statement of Attainment for all successful units completed.

The successful achievement of this qualification requires you to complete all core units listed below, plus a combination of elective units with a total value of 300 points. Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this course.

Selection criteria

Students must hold a current unrestricted Electrical Mechanic Licence to obtain the full qualification.  Students who do not hold a current unrestricted Electrical Mechanic Licence will exit with a Statement of Attainment.

Resources Required

You are responsible for meeting the minimum occupational health and safety requirements in practical classes. This includes the use of safety glasses, protective footwear with covered uppers, steel capped toes and non-slip soles to AS2210, long leather gloves to AS2161, and hair protection. You should also wear 100% cotton drill industry-standard clothing. If you fail to meet these minimum standards of dress, you will not be permitted entry into practical classes.

Need to know

Replacement qualification
This qualification has been replaced by UEE42620 - Certificate IV in Hazardous areas - Electrical, as of 4 October 2020.  Please note: TAFE Queensland has been given approval to extend the transition period until 5 October 2022, to enable current students to complete their study. If required, current enrolment will be transitioned into the replacement qualification.
