Course overview

Set yourself on the path to a career in business with this introductory qualification. This course will prepare you for further study and equip you with the foundation skills to work in a range of entry-level administrative positions.

According to the Australian Government's Job Outlook service, the number of people working as general clerks grew strongly over the past five years and is expected to continue to grow in the future. This is a very large occupation with over 182,000 job opening expected over the next five years.

In this course you will develop the basic skills needed to work effectively in a business environment. You will learn how to use digital devices and technologies for work practices, as well as how to collect and record data. You will also learn how to work effectively with others and be sustainable in the workplace.

Successful completion of this course will give you the basic knowledge required to complete further studies in this area. You will also be prepared to enter the workforce in a range of administrative and clerical roles.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this course.

Selection criteria

You will be required to complete the bksb to identify any Learning Support needs.

It is recommended that you have an understanding of basic business and technology concepts, which may have been acquired through previous training, qualifications and/or work experience in a business-related field.

You will be required to access and use technology to complete the learning assessment activities and resources within this course.

Resources required

It is recommended that you have access to a reliable internet connection to access TAFE Queensland's online learning system Connect, and a computer with up-to-date software, including Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat Reader and Adobe Flash Player. This equipment and software is available for use at all TAFE Queensland locations.

You will be provided with a recommended reading list and/or required textbooks during orientation or at the start of each unit. The purchase of these resources may incur additional costs, or you may be able to borrow them from the TAFE Queensland library network.

You are also required to have access to a calculator, a laptop or tablet device, a USB, a headset including microphone).

Assessment Methods

Skill and knowledge assessments are an essential step in progressing through your course. You may be assessed in a number of ways while you are studying at TAFE Queensland, including observation, written assessment, questioning, portfolios, work samples, third-party feedback, and through recognition of prior learning.
