Embark upon a career in a wide variety of information service areas with this entry-level course. With a certification in Library and Information Services you will have the practical skills necessary to assist people with general inquiries, provide information, and maintain catalogues of information. This qualification provides skills that are transferable to a number of different industries including museums and art galleries, giving you greater employment opportunities.
According to the Australian Government's Job Outlook service, there are expected to be around 6,000 positions created for library assistants over the next five years. Employers are looking for qualified candidates who can self-manage, provide good customer service, and interact well with a variety of people.
In this course you will gain practical skills and knowledge in the library and information service industries including cataloguing tools, processing loans and returns, and maintaining information resources. You will also learn how to use social media tools to connect with the community. At TAFE Queensland our teachers are experts in their field, meaning you gain valuable knowledge from people who live and breath the industry.
On successful completion of this course you will be able to work in libraries and information services as a library assistant, customer service officer, or information officer. This course also provides you with the foundation knowledge to complete further training through our pathways to higher education.

While there are no entry requirements for this course, TAFE Queensland requires you to have a good knowledge of computer basics and a sound achievement in Year 10 Maths, and English is desirable. If you are under 17 years of age, special enrolment conditions may apply.

Traineeship pathway
To study a traineeship program you must be indentured as a trainee with your employer.
Employers need to be able to provide necessary human and physical resources to qualify for a trainee.

You are required to access and use technology to complete the learning and assessment activities and resources within this program. This can be through your own device and internet connection, or through regional TAFE campus or library.
To get the best education experience, your computer/device will need to meet the following minimum requirements:
If you are not currently working in a library or information organisation, during your course it is recommended that you complete a minimum 30 hours of work experience. This is important so you can start practising your new skills in a real-world environment. You’ll be required to work shifts determined by your provider.
Library services may require proof of vaccination to be provided to complete the work experience.
Order of Study
When studying Online self-directed it is strongly recommended students follow the order of study and enrol in no more than two units per intake or the units required to complete one cluster/stage, unless otherwise advised.
Skill and knowledge assessments are an essential step in progressing through your course. You may be assessed in a number of ways while you are studying at TAFE Queensland, including observation, written assessment, questioning, portfolios, work samples, third-party feedback, and through recognition of prior learning. If you want to go on to further study at university, TAFE Queensland has a pathway option to get you there. In many cases, completing one of our diplomas may give you a full year of credit towards a degree with one of our partner universities.
