This qualification will set you on the path to employment opportunities in specialised diagnostic, servicing, repair, and maintenance roles.

According to the Australian Government's Job Outlook service, demand for qualified mechanics has grown strongly, with around 23,000 job openings expected over the next five years.

In this course, you'll learn to perform advanced diagnostic operations on various vehicle systems, including engines, transmissions, suspensions, ignition, and electronic engine management. You'll gain the skills to identify complex faults and perform advanced analysis and modification tasks to enhance vehicle performance. Industry-experienced teachers will support you throughout the course.

Successful completion will qualify you to work as an automotive mechanic or vehicle technician across a range of areas.

    Unit description :
    This unit describes the performance outcomes required to diagnose faults in complex vehicle, vessels or machinery systems to determine the repair action necessary to restore system performance. It involves confirming the existence of a complex system fault, choosing the required diagnostic procedure and tools, applying the diagnostic procedure, reporting conclusions, and making repair recommendations. A complex system integrates two or more automotive systems, or incorporates three or more mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical or electronic sub-systems. Examples include electronically controlled automatic transmissions, anti-lock braking systems, and engine management systems integrating ignition, fuel and transmission control systems. It applies to those working in the automotive service and repair industry. No licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication

Skills check

You will be invited to complete a Skills Check following your application submission, before enrolling to your studies. This helps you to decide if your course is right for you and allows us to understand your current abilities in English, Maths, as well as using Digital technology. 

The recommended benchmark levels for this course are 4 in English, in 4 Maths and 4 in Digital Technology.

If you are applying for a VET Student Loan the required levels to meet academic eligibility, as outlined by Commonwealth guidelines, is Level 4 English and Maths.

You must have completed an automotive mechanical Certificate III qualification or be able to demonstrate equivalent competency to enrol into this qualification.

Resources required

You are responsible for meeting the minimum occupational health and safety requirements in practical classes.
This includes the use of:

  • clear safety glasses to AS 1336 or 1337
  • protective footwear with safety toe cap and non-slip soles to AS2210
  • mechanic gloves
  • ear plugs or muffs
  • You should also wear 100% cotton drill industry-standard protective clothing

If you fail to meet these minimum standards of dress, you will not be permitted entry into practical classes.

You will be provided with a recommended reading list and/or required textbooks after enrolment, during orientation or at the start of each unit. The purchase of these resources may incur additional costs, or you may be able to borrow them from the TAFE Queensland library network.

You are also required to have access to and bring personal stationary, a USB, and a calculator.

Assessment methods

Skill and knowledge assessments are an essential step in progressing through your course. You may be assessed in a number of ways while you are studying at TAFE Queensland, including observation, written assessment, questioning, portfolios, work samples, third-party feedback, and through recognition of prior learning.
