Course overview

This course covers the requirements of the STCW Reg IV/2. Individuals holding the Certificate are rapidly alerted to distress incidents, so they can assist in a co-ordinated search and rescue operation with the minimum of delay.

Participants in the GMDSS (GOC) will receive training in the use of digital selective calling techniques for communication using MF, HF and VHF radiotelephone, HF radio telex and satellite communication using INMARSAT-C ship earth stations.

There are no formal entry requirements for this course.

Selection criteria

While there are no formal entry requirements, TAFE Queensland will require you to possess the following:

  • keyboard skills to a minimum of 10 words per minute at 98% accuracy; and
  • be able to express yourself satisfactorily in the English language, both oral and written.

Resources required

A notebook and pen are required for theory components.

Appropriate clothing and protective footwear must be worn at all times.
