Course overview

Progress to the final stage of AS1796 Welder Certification with Weld Australia by completing your practical examination with TAFE Queensland.

You will complete a practical examination for the below  processes. You are required to meet all the requirements as outlined by AS1796 Certification of Welders.

This is what the examination and assessment process covers: 

  • Certificate No. 1 - Manual metal-arc welding (MMAW) of welds in carbon steel plate and carbon steel pipe over 600 mm outside diameter (single vee welded from both sides)
  • Certificate No. 1E - Manual metal-arc welding (MMAW) of welds in carbon steel plate and carbon steel pipe over 270 mm outside diameter (single vee welded from one side only)
  • Certificate No. 3 - Manual metal-arc welding (MMAW) of welds using hydrogen controlled electrodes in alloy steel plate and alloy steel pipe over 600 mm outside diameter (single vee welded from both sides)
  • Certificate No. 3E - Manual metal-arc welding (MMAW) of welds using   hydrogen controlled electrodes in alloy steel plate and alloy steel pipe over 270 mm outside diameter (single vee welded from one side only)

Entry requirements

You must provide evidence of Weld Australia approval documentation.

Recommended
To help you prepare for the practical examination, it is recommended that you complete AS1796 Welding Certification Training  (Welding Certification Preparatory)

Resources required

You are responsible for meeting the minimum workplace health and safety requirements in practical classes.

Workwear and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required may include:

  • Protective clothing - long cotton drill trousers, and long-sleeved cotton drill shirt
  • Eye protection – safety glasses must comply with AS1338
  • Hearing protection - must comply with AS1270 (may be supplied)
  • Protective footwear - safety toe, leather upper, non-slip soles must comply with AS2210
  • Hair protection - peak cap with a snood capable of fully containing hair
  • Welding helmet - it is preferred that you provide your own for hygiene reasons and it must comply with AS1338-1
  • Long welding gloves
  • If you are required to undertake activities that produce welding fumes you will be required to use a PAPR unit or P2 moulded half-face respirators that has been fit tested, or an alternative of equal or higher protection 

If you fail to meet these minimum standards of dress, you will not be permitted entry into practical classes.

Important information

You must apply to Weld Australia for vetting and endorsement prior to enrolling in this course. 

It is recommended that you complete the welding certification theory component with Weld Australia before undertaking the examination. 

Certification will be issued by Weld Australia upon successful completion of Weld Australia Theory and one of the above AS 1796 Certification of Welders practical examinations, in accordance with the AS1796 Certification of Welders standard, subject to evidence of successful completion of the practical examination being provided to Weld Australia. 

T he cost of the course covers the examination by TAFE Queensland, however you will incur an additional fee with Weld Australia at the time of your application. 

Re-test Information 
If one test weld does not meet the standard requirements, the candidate will be given one opportunity to re‑test that weld. 

  • If the re‑test is non‑compliant, the examination will conclude.
  • If more than one test weld is non‑compliant during the initial test, the examination will conclude. 

Following a non‑conformant examination outcome, candidates may choose to re‑enrol in further training and/or examination opportunities.
