Stick - MMAW Certification (Plate). Ticket 1, 1E, 3, 3E - Weld Australia Certification (AS1796)

Selection criteria

You will be required to enrol and complete the Welding Certification Preparatory course or meet the below evidence requirements. You will benefit from enrolling into this course to practice your skills prior to your assessment for the Weld Australia Certification AS1796.
 
For Certificates No. 1 and No. 1E, a candidate shall meet one of the following:

1. One year’s welding experience, subsequent to or during an apprenticeship to an acceptable trade including 40 hours’ training in the use of manual metal-arc welding of plate.
2. Two years’ welding experience and documentary evidence of the successful completion of one or more welding programs, which includes at least 300 hours’ training, in the theory and practice of welding including the welding of plate using the manual metal-arc welding process.
3. Three years’ welding experience and, during or subsequent to this period, 40 hours’ training in the welding of plate using the manual metal-arc welding process.

 
For Certificates No. 3 and 3E, a candidate shall meet one of the following:

1. One year’s welding experience, subsequent to or during an apprenticeship to an acceptable trade, including 40 hours’ training in the welding of plate using the manual metal-arc welding process with hydrogen-controlled electrodes.
2. Two years’ welding experience and documentary evidence of the successful completion of one or more welding programs, which includes at least 240 hours’ training in the theory and practice of welding and, during or subsequent to this period, 40 hours’ training. In the welding of plate using the manual metal-arc welding process with hydrogen-controlled electrodes.
3. Three years’ welding experience and, during or subsequent to this period, 40 hours’ training in the welding of plate using hydrogen-controlled electrodes.

Workwear and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE):

• Protective clothing - long cotton drill trousers, and long-sleeved cotton drill shirt
• Eye protection - must comply with AS1338
• Hearing protection - must comply with AS1270 (is supplied)
• Protective footwear - safety toe, leather upper, non-slip – must comply with AS2210
• Hair protection - peak cap with a snood capable of fully containing hair
• Welding helmets - it is preferred that you provide your own for hygiene reasons and it must comply with AS1338-1

Students who do not meet these minimum standards of work wear and PPE will not be permitted entry into workshops.

To obtain the Certification of Welders AS1796 with Weld Australia, you are required to complete theory and practical requirements as outlined by AS1796 Certification of Welders.

Your teacher will assist you in the submission of evidence with Weld Australia. The cost of the course covers the examination by TAFE Queensland, however you will incur an additional fee with Weld Australia at the time of your application.

TAFE Queensland provides training in the area of welding theory if you are seeking to complete the theory assessment through Weld Australia, see Welding Certification Theory. You can concurrently complete the practical and theory requirements however, you must apply for certification within two (2) years of having completing both theory and practical assessments.

You shall submit to the examining body authenticated documentary evidence of having pre-examination requirements specified for the necessary certificate.

Documentary evidence
The documentary evidence shall include details of:

1. Attending or having attended one or more welding courses of instruction.
2. Experience gained in work that includes, joints, materials, and thicknesses not differing greatly from practical tests for the required certificate as specified in this standard. 

Re-testing Information 
Where one of the test welds does not comply with standard requirements, you will be provided to re-test that weld. Non-compliance of this re-test will mark conclusion of the examination. Non-compliance of more than one test weld marks the conclusion of the examination. Following a non-conformant examination, you may choose to re-enrol for further training and/or examination opportunities.
