Course overview

This course reflects the role of educators in school age education and care/Outside School Hours Care who work according to the requirements of the National Quality Framework. They support children’s wellbeing and development in the context of an approved learning framework. They develop and implement play and leisure experiences with or without supervision. Educators in this context work in outside school hours care and vacation care (also known as School Age Care).

To achieve this qualification, the individual must have completed a total of least 320 hours of work in a regulated children’s education and care service in Australia as detailed in the Assessment Requirements of units of competency.

This unit applies to a range of workers within an education and care setting who are required to respond to a first aid emergency, including asthma and anaphylactic emergencies. This includes early childhood workers and educators who work with school age children in outside school hours care and vacation programs. This unit of competency may contribute towards approved first aid, asthma and anaphylaxis training under the Education and Care Services National Law, and the Education and Care Services National Regulations (2011). Entry requirements

Selection criteria

To work or undertake placement in a registered Outside School Hours Care Service – a Current Blue Card is required. These can be obtained from the Blue Card Services, if you reside in Queensland. Any students residing outside of Queensland will need to obtain a working with children check in their relevant state. A Registered Training Organisation or an Outside School Hours Care Service must validate the need for a Blue Card/Working with children check. PLEASE ENSURE these are organised as a priority when commencing your course, if you do not already hold a working with children check/Blue Card.

Online self-directed
Students are required to complete placement throughout their studies for the duration of the course. It is recommended that students attend placement one (1) day per week for the duration of their enrolments. Block placement at the beginning or end of studies is not suitable for Online self-directed study.

Resources required

You must have access to a reliable internet connection to access TAFE Queensland's online learning system Connect, and a computer with up-to-date software, including Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat Reader. This equipment and software is available for use at all TAFE Queensland locations.

Placement

A total of at least 320 hours of work with school age children in a regulated children’s education and care service in Australia is required.

Order of Study
When studying Online self-directed it is strongly recommended students follow the order of study and enrol in no more than two units per intake or the units required to complete one cluster/stage, unless otherwise advised.
