Course overview

This skill set provides the required skills and knowledge to operate a non‑slewing mobile crane with a capacity greater than 3 tonnes. A person performing this work is required to hold the appropriate High Risk Work (HRW) licence. This unit requires a person operating a non‑slewing mobile crane to plan the work, conduct pre‑operational checks, set up the crane, operate the crane to lift and move loads, and then shut down and secure the equipment safely. You will learn directly from industry experts, gaining practical, hands‑on experience to prepare them for this significant operational responsibility. This unit will ensure you are skilled, confident and qualified to operate a non‑slewing mobile crane greater than 3 tonnes, meeting strict safety and regulatory requirements for high‑risk crane operations.

    Unit description :
    This unit specifies the skills and knowledge required to operate a non-slewing mobile crane with a Rated Capacity (RC) exceeding three tonnes safely, in accordance with all relevant legislative responsibilities. Competence in this unit, does not in itself result in a High Risk Work Licence (HRWL) to operate this plant. Competence in this unit does not allow for driving an articulated mobile crane on a main or public road. In order to drive on a main or public road, a valid heavy vehicle licence, issued by a transport regulator, is required.

You are responsible for meeting the minimum occupational health and safety requirements as per site requirements.
All personal protective equipment and stationery is to be supplied at your own cost.
This includes the use of:

  • protective footwear with safety toe cap and non-slip soles to AS2210
  • gloves
  • helmet
  • long sleeved high vis vest
  • long trousers

You will also require:

Important information

Legislative and regulatory requirements apply to this unit of competency. TLILIC0040 – Licence to operate a non‑slewing mobile crane (greater than 3 tonnes) is based on the licensing requirements outlined in Part 4.5 of the Model Work Health and Safety (WHS) Regulations, and meets all Commonwealth, state and territory High Risk Work Licence (HRWL) requirements. Learners must complete a minimum of 20 hours of logged operating experience prior to undertaking the formal High Risk Work assessment. This experience must be documented in an approved logbook and verified by a qualified and competent person. The National Assessment Instrument (NAI) is the mandated assessment tool for this licensing class. All candidates must successfully complete the NAI to be eligible to apply for the High Risk Work Licence for non‑slewing mobile crane.
