The fitness industry in Australia is booming. According to the Australian Government's Job Outlook service, the number of people working as fitness instructors is growing very strongly with around 21,000 job openings predicted over the next five years. 

In addition to learning specialised skills and knowledge to instruct personal training programs, group personal training, and exercise for older clients, you may also learn the fundamentals of operating your own small personal training business.

Entry requirements

Entry to this qualification is open to individuals who hold the following units of competency or units that have been superseded by these units:

  • HLTAID011 Provide First Aid (or a unit that supersedes this unit)
  • HLTWHS001 Participate in workplace health and safety
  • SISFFIT032 Complete pre-exercise screening and service orientation
  • SISFFIT033 Complete client fitness assessments
  • SISFFIT035 Plan group exercise sessions
  • SISFFIT036 Instruct group exercise sessions
  • SISFFIT040 Develop and instruct gym-based exercise programs for individual clients
  • SISFFIT047 Use anatomy and physiology knowledge to support safe and effective exercise
  • SISFFIT052 Provide healthy eating information

Students who hold SIS30315 Certificate III in Fitness, will need to have completed the two group exercise elective units SISFFIT007 & SISFFIT011 to meet the entry requirements for this qualification. If your qualification does not contain these units, you will need to complete the following two units prior to enrolling in this program, SISFFIT035 and SISFFIT036.

Resources required

You are responsible for meeting the minimum standard of dress. This includes having access to and wearing appropriate general fitness attire and enclosed shoes. You may be required to purchase TAFE Queensland branded uniform items. The purchase of these uniform items may incur additional costs. More details will be provided after enrolment or during orientation.

Robina campus
The Robina campus will be a BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) campus for general learning.  Students are able to access discounted pricing for device purchases via JB Hi-Fi.  TAFE Queensland will have some portable devices available for short term loan and there will also be a limited number of desktop computers located on-site that students will be able to access.  For all the details visit the BYOD page on our website. 

Placement

This qualification contains 40 hours of vocational placement that is required to be performed outside of timetabled classes. A Vocational Placement co-ordinator will assist with organising placement.
