Course overview

This five day generic course has been designed for candidates for certification as officers in charge of a navigational watch on an Electronic Chart Display Information System (ECDIS) compliant vessel and for experienced nautical officers and other persons with navigational responsibilities on an ECDIS compliant vessel.

Based on the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) 1.27 model course fulfilling the 40-hour generic course requirement as per the Manila July 2011 amendments to Standard of Training and Certification of Watchkeepers (STCW95).

The Electronic Chart Display Information System (ECDIS) course provides the knowledge, skills and understanding of ECDIS and electronic charts to the thorough extent needed to safely navigate vessels whose primary means of navigation is ECDIS.

Entry requirements

Selection criteria

It is highly recommended that you:

  • have experience in performing chart work and should be able to practise all usual tasks concerning standard navigational procedures and equipment; 
  • know about the functions and limitations of other navigational equipment; and
  • have basic computer skills 

Important information

100% attendance is mandatory. There will be written assessments during the course and a practical assessment on a full ship’s simulator towards the end of the course.

The course will be conducted with a mixture of lectures and practical exercises with a limit of eight students with each student having their own ECDIS unit to use during the course.
