Nine essential short courses for small construction businesses

TAFE Queensland is currently offering a range of non-accredited short courses subsidised by Construction Skills Queensland (CSQ).

You’re running a business you have a million things to do, and there’s not enough hours in the day. If you didn’t have to spend so much time on this thing, then you would have more time on that thing. Building proficiency is helpful, because when we know what we’re doing, and how to do it well, we tend to be able to do it much faster.

TAFE Queensland is offering a range of short courses to small businesses in construction. Thanks to Construction Skills Queensland, these courses are either fully funded or heavily subsidised.

#1 Small Business Marketing

Marketing is how your business gets seen—it’s critical to the success of your business. This course is perfect for owners, or employees of small businesses who are keen to get noticed, and draw customers in.

#2 Create and Manage Facebook Advertising

Most Australians are on Facebook, so it makes sense you should be there too. Creating an advertisement on the platform requires more time and know-how than a simple status update. Not to worry, we’ll show you how you can stop your customers from scrolling, and create and manage your own Facebook advertising.

#3 Promotion for Small Business

How do you make your customers notice you? Through promotion. You need to tell the market that you exist, and that you have a product (or service) that can meet their needs. This course will help you understand how to define and reach your target audience through marketing.

#4 Starting and Managing a Small Business

Starting and managing a small business can be challenging—where do you start, and once you’ve started how do you keep it going? In this course, you’ll cover a range of topics including the business environment, the market niche, golden rules of business, owner/manager responsibilities, the business cycle and more.

#5 Introduction to Accounting

Businesses often fail because of cash flow problems. With better cashflow management and a basic understanding of accounting, you can better position your business for success. In this accounting 101 you’ll learn important skills that will help keep you afloat.

#6 Financial and Budgeting Skills

Managing a budget is a fine art, to say the least. Budgets, whether for home or work help is identify all the things that need to happen with your money. Learn how to manage and forecast with this fundamental short course.

#7 Negotiation and Conflict Resolution

All negotiation requires a bit of give and take, and the ability to negotiate and resolve conflicts well is an important skill that anyone running a small business should master. This course is great for anyone just starting, or who has been managing their small business for a while.

#8 Digital Skills

Digital skills are defined as a range of abilities to use digital devices, communication applications, and networks to access and manage information. This course has been designed to give small business owners, the knowledge and confidence to implement digital solutions in their business to increase efficiency and productivity.

#9 Comply with legislation, regulation & code

It may not be the most exciting topic, but it’s important. Being compliant with legislation, regulation and code are vital to the success of any small business. This course will give you the basic skills and knowledge you need to interpret these artefacts, and apply them to your business.
