Passing with flying colours

As a teacher aide Adrienne Shaw is used to seeing student’s emotions and elation when they pass an assessment, and now thanks to an opportunity to gain her Certificate III in Education Support (CHC30213) through recognition of prior learning (RPL) she is able to share in that feeling too.

Adrienne recently completed the Certificate III in Education Support (CHC30213) via Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) at TAFE Queensland.

“I’m now one of the more mature staff members at my school, but I’m so pleased that I took on the challenge of attaining the certificate qualification – one can never be too old to learn new things,” Mrs Shaw said.

“I had a real sense of accomplishment when I was told I had passed with flying colours.”

Queensland teacher aides can achieve their qualification through RPL at TAFE Queensland, and may be eligible to access funding assistance from the Queensland Government.

Adrienne, a Gold Coast grandmother of two who has been employed at Caningeraba State School for 22 years, said the RPL process was easy to navigate and helped her to learn new skills that she has taken back to the classroom, after the past five years working in the library.

“I very quickly realised that so many changes had occurred in the classroom learning environment with new programs and initiatives being introduced.”

“Working through RPL modules gave me the opportunity to examine, learn or re-learn many different aspects of school life. The process was smooth, and TAFE provided me with excellent materials, support, communication and feedback.”

“It certainly gave me much more confidence walking into the classroom, able to deliver new literacy and numeracy programs as well as feeling competent liaising with teaching staff and interacting with students.”

Mrs Shaw said she highly recommended other eligible teacher aides take the plunge and gain their qualification.

“The staff at TAFE were wonderful, always available to answer my questions, to give me guidance and support along the journey to gaining my certificate,” she said.

“I would like to acknowledge the staff at TAFE Queensland for the support, guidance and encouragement I received in my journey to become a TA3.”

As part of the Queensland Department of Education’s Standing Offer Arrangement (SOA QED101115), TAFE Queensland is providing the Certificate III in Education Support (CHC30213) through a recognition of prior learning (RPL) process.

Experienced teacher aides (TA2 level 4) employed in state schools can access the arrangement to gain a full qualification. There’s no cost to teacher aides—schools will fund the cost of the RPL program.
