TAFE Training builds steely workforce

For almost 50 years Rockpress has relied on TAFE Queensland-trained staff and apprentices to retain its position as Brisbane’s most highly-regarded steel fabrication supplier.

With a factory floor space of 12,000m2 and more than 90 staff, Rockpress has the resources and capacity to handle projects of any size — from simple metal componentry through to major structural, industrial and architectural works.

Over the years Rockpress has engaged more than 150 apprentices and tradespeople who were undertaking their training at TAFE Queensland.

“The facility at TAFE Queensland provided our staff with the most up-to-date technology available to train our guys,” Rockpress Assistant Manager Allan Mortensen said.

Most recently, Rockpress engaged TAFE Queensland to provide the Course in Fusion Welding for Experienced Welders (22462 VIC) to meet the requirements of the international welding standard ISO 9606.

“When our staff returned from the 9606 course we saw a definite increase in their self-confidence and their level of problem-solving has definitely increased, which obviously means that at the end of the day we have less non-conforming products — we have more productivity,” Mr Mortensen said.

“For the ISO 9606, I would highly recommend TAFE Queensland. They have delivered an absolutely fantastic course to us which has improved our guys substantially.”

TAFE Queensland is proud to be the largest and most experienced vocational education and training provider in the state.

Each year TAFE Queensland partners with over 13,000 Queensland small businesses and provides around 20,000 apprentices with the training they need to be job-ready.

“We are constantly working closely with industry to shape our training products and delivery modes to keep up with industry growth and the occupations likely to develop in the future. We want to ensure we have job-ready graduates in growth sectors and occupations, and assist employers to future-proof their businesses,” TAFE Queensland Head of Commercial Business Robert Petherbridge said.

“As the needs of our employers and industry change, so does our training. Each year we work closely with local industry to shape our training products and our delivery modes to ensure our training meets current and future employment demands. We want to ensure we have job-ready graduates who can assist employers to innovate and grow their businesses.”
