Supporting those just like him

As a fourth generation defence force member, it comes as no surprise that Michael Wulff is committed to ensuring his Australian Defence Force (ADF) counterparts are well looked after when they decide to enter the civilian workforce.

Michael, affectionately known as Wulffy, serving as a Naval Clearance Diver and Counter Terrorist Water Operator with SAS Regiment before discharging after seven years of service.

At that time, no support existed for defence personnel entering the civilian workforce, so he drove a delivery truck and navigated both university and vocational education pursuits, before landing leadership positions at various high-profile companies, though never losing touch with his defence roots.

About two years ago, Michael learnt about the Queensland Government's Defence to Civilian Success Training Program, which supports Australian Defence Force veterans moving into civilian careers by providing support and training opportunities and knew he had to be part of it.

“I have always maintained strong links with ex service organisations, so it was a natural progression for me to join the TAFE Queensland Defence Solutions Team in order to be that mentor with ADF person’s transitioning easily into the civilian pathway unlike my own experience,” he said.

As a Defence Solution Project Officer employed by TAFE Queensland, Michael has already assisted more than 500 former defence personnel into training to help them discover new skills and civilian careers.

“I’m a conduit between defence and industry – the missing piece of the jigsaw for these people. I am able to look at their ADF records and skillsets and guide them into a sector where there are lots of opportunities,” he said.

“It is very rewarding. Some members become lost and don’t know where to turn – we speak their language so we can guide them and offer encouragement. We stay in contact with them as well, which is really important for their sense of wellbeing.”

Over the years, among his other qualifications, Michael has completed seven diplomas so is well qualified to vouch for the value of vocational education.

“I definitely embraced the educational pathway so I know first-hand how it can really make a difference,” Michael said.
