University students turn to TAFE Queensland for practical experience

Southern Cross University Master of Social Work students, Yunping Zhou and Anju Sheoran discovered the power of hands-on learning during work placement at TAFE Queensland on the Gold Coast.

Yunping and Anju dove into real-world scenarios, collaborating with the Diploma of Mental Health (CHC53315) students at the Southport campus to create and deliver impactful live activities during Mental Health Week.

One highlight was the 5-4-3-2-1 grounding technique event, an interactive display inviting staff and students to explore sensory-based strategies for managing stress, anxiety, and panic while enhancing mental well-being.

Anju, 28, emphasised the real-world applicability of her time at TAFE Queensland.

"Participating in real-world Mental Health Week activities taught me to adapt to diverse attendee needs—a skill invaluable for my future in social work,” Anju said.

"This hands-on approach gave me the opportunity to apply knowledge in real-world settings, enhancing my understanding of social work in action," she said.

Meanwhile Yunping, 30, explained how her placement allowed her to observe classes, interact with students, and engage in activities that develop practical skills.

“My learning experience at TAFE Queensland was incredibly enriching," Yunping said.

“I feel much more confident than before. The experience reinforced my belief that I can be an effective social worker and positively impact people’s lives. The interactions I had built my confidence and affirmed my abilities.”

“The Peer Work class was particularly impactful, as students shared lived experiences that taught me to appreciate life more and not take things for granted. These students became my teachers in many ways," she said.

Both students recognised TAFE Queensland as an excellent steppingstone to higher education and careers in mental health and social work.

"It’s the practical, supportive and hands-on training approach that makes TAFE Queensland such an invaluable steppingstone for anyone pursuing a future in mental health and social work,” said Yunping.

Anju agreeing stating that the combination of University and TAFE helped her develop both the theoretical knowledge and practical skills needed to succeed in the field.

"Unlike university, where the focus is often theoretical, TAFE provides hands-on learning that directly prepares students for professional environments."

"Together, they complement each other, providing a well-rounded approach to social work," she said.

TAFE Queensland’s Diploma of Mental Health (CHC53315) equips students with foundational knowledge in counselling, case management, and mental health strategies, preparing them for careers in social work and related fields.
