Queensland’s first Mobile Renewable Energy Training Facility: Powering skills for a sustainable future
TAFE Queensland is proud to be leading the charge in delivering innovative, future-focused training solutions to regional communities across the state.
As part of our commitment to supporting Queensland’s transition to a clean energy future, TAFE Queensland is developing the state’s first Mobile Renewable Energy Training Facilities (MRETF) - a groundbreaking initiative funded through the Queensland Government’s Regional Economic Futures Fund (REFF).
The MRETFs are state-of-the-art mobile units designed to bring specialised renewable energy training directly to regional and remote communities. These facilities will be equipped with cutting-edge technology, including:
- Off-grid batteries and controllers
- Mini wind and hydrogen generators
- Immersive XR (Virtual and Augmented Reality) learning experiences.
This mobile approach ensures that even the most geographically isolated areas can access high-quality training in solar, wind, hydro, and hydrogen energy systems - technologies that are central to Queensland’s clean energy future.
In addition to the physical infrastructure, TAFE Queensland is developing a suite of specialised training products to support the rollout of the MRETF. These include:
- Micro-credentials
- Skill sets
- Train-the-trainer materials
- Nationally accredited units of competency.
These resources are being designed in consultation with local communities and industry to ensure they meet the specific skilling needs of each region.
This project is one of five being delivered by TAFE Queensland under the REFF to support regional economic development. The MRETF represents a $4.5 million investment in regional skills and workforce capability, ensuring Queenslanders are equipped to thrive in the rapidly growing renewable energy sector.
“Our goal is to empower Queenslanders with the knowledge and practical skills required to participate in and lead the renewable energy transformation,” TAFE Queensland East Coast General Manager Mark Reilly said.
The MRETFs are being constructed by Allweld Manufacturing Pty Ltd, a proud second-generation Indigenous-owned company based in Maryborough. Allweld is one of the largest employers in the Wide Bay region, with 111 staff, including 39 apprentices -three of whom are currently training with TAFE Queensland.
Around 10 local Maryborough residents (six tradespeople and four apprentices) will be directly involved in building the MRETFs, reinforcing the project’s commitment to local job creation and skills development.
Allweld’s expansion, supported through the Queensland Government’s Industry Partnership Program (IPP), has already created over 20 new jobs and added advanced CNC laser technology and a new training and resource centre to its operations.
TAFE Queensland is proud to partner with the Queensland Government and Allweld Manufacturing to deliver this transformative initiative.
“As Queensland’s leading provider of vocational education and training, we are committed to ensuring that all communities -regardless of location -have access to the skills and opportunities needed to thrive in a changing economy,” Mark said.
“The MRETF is more than just a training facility; it’s a symbol of innovation, collaboration, and our shared commitment to a sustainable future, and by investing in renewable energy training and regional workforce development, we are helping to position Queensland as a national leader in clean energy and advanced manufacturing.
“Together, we’re powering the future- one community at a time.”
