Brooklyn’s power play

Brooklyn Board doesn’t walk into a room, she bounces in. At 18, the women’s rugby player is stronger, faster, and more focused than ever.

Her secret weapon? The game-changing skills she’s building in her Certificate III in Fitness (SIS30321) at TAFE Queensland’s Robina campus.

“I’ve been playing footy for seven years,” Brooklyn said.

“Studying fitness is helping me better myself in my sport and set up a career in the fitness industry.”

That career already has serious momentum. Rugby has taken Brooklyn across the country for state titles and nationals, but it’s what she’s learning at TAFE Queensland’s Robina campus that’s taking her performance to a whole new level.

“It’s changed my whole view on sport,” she said.

“Knowing exactly how every muscle and exercise connects to my game, it’s made me sharper, faster and stronger.”

Brooklyn said the Robina campus is the ultimate playground for people like her.

“There are lots of great facilities on-campus, everything’s so hands-on, and you’re gaining real-life experience from day one.”

The teachers, she said, make the experience even better.

“They’re incredible. They tell you stories from their own careers, they make every lesson interesting, and they’re constantly encouraging you. You’re never just ‘another student’, they want to see you win.”

“I thought TAFE would be like school, but it’s not even close. Here, they know you, they care about you, and if you need help, they’ll find a way to give it to you every step of the way,” said Brooklyn.

Brooklyn’s already looking to upskill with TAFE Queensland’s Certificate IV in Fitness (SIS40221), with plans to become a personal trainer specialising in sports performance and, eventually, coach the next generation of athletes.

Her advice to other young women looking to follow the same path?

“Just go for it. If you’re interested in this course and passionate about it, you’ll gain the skills and knowledge to work in something you love.”
