Future Gymnastics Coaches Take the Floor with TAFE Queensland and Gymnastics Queensland

TAFE Queensland and Gymnastics Queensland are proud to shine a spotlight on the next generation of coaches, with students currently completing their Certificate II and III in Sport Coaching (SIS20321/SIS30521) as part of a unique partnership delivering real-world, industry-led training at the Sleeman Sports Complex.

Through the program, students gain hands-on experience and access to Gymnastics Queensland’s coaching and judging accreditation pathways, all guided by some of the sport’s most experienced professionals.

“Some of the students—two of them—recently completed their first coaching accreditation, called Fundamental Gymnastics Coach, which is pretty exciting,” said Laura Watson, the Workforce Development Manager of Gymnastics Queensland.

“Everyone in our TAFE course partnership has been given complimentary access to our coaching and judging accreditation frameworks, as well as professional development opportunities—all of which significantly enhance their chances of securing paid work in the gymnastics industry, where demand is strong.”

Each Friday, students are given dedicated time to complete components of the Gymnastics Queensland coaching system, with Laura providing on-site technical support.

“I head up there to offer technical support when needed,” she said. “Some of them are absolutely thriving!”

Delivered on-site at Gymnastics Queensland’s world-class facility, the Certificate II and III in Sport Coaching are nationally recognised qualifications that build practical coaching skills, communication, and leadership—all within an elite sporting environment.

The program allows students in Years 10, 11 and 12 to attend the Sleeman Sports Complex one day per week in place of a regular school day. These qualifications contribute valuable QCE credits and may also support an ATAR score. Gymnastics Queensland enhances the learning experience by providing access to facilities, expert guest speakers, and industry accreditation pathways, helping students transition into paid roles in the sport.

The curriculum covers key areas such as planning and delivering coaching sessions, working with young athletes, understanding injury prevention and sport science principles, and applying inclusive coaching practices. The Certificate II serves as an entry point into the industry, while the Certificate III builds leadership capability and prepares students for assistant coaching and community sport roles.

“From January 2026, eligible Year 11 and 12 students will be able to access the Queensland Government’s Career Ready program, which funds one Certificate II qualification—including the Certificate II in Sport Coaching,” said Don Harley, Manager of TAFE Queensland’s Academy of Sport.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity for students to undertake a fully funded course and take meaningful steps toward being career-ready.”

As part of the Academy of Sport initiative, TAFE Queensland’s sport coaching programs are closely aligned with Queensland’s Olympic and Paralympic ambitions, preparing students for future careers in the sport and recreation industry.

“The students are learning from inside the sport. For those interested in coaching or staying involved in gymnastics after school, this program sets them up perfectly.”

Applications for the Semester 1, 2026 intake will open on 28 July 2025 and will be available through the TAFE Queensland Academy of Sport website.
