Howard went from boardroom boss to community hero

Howard Campbell never imagined a life helping others. After decades climbing the corporate ladder in high-pressure management roles, the 68-year-old admits he “had little time for people” who didn’t share his drive.

But a life-changing decision to study Community Services at TAFE Queensland completely reshaped his perspective.

“I was amazed at this late stage in my life, I could gain insights I’d been blind to until now,” Howard said.

“Understanding mental health and addiction challenges has been profound. I now see people I once judged differently, and I can actually help,” he said.

Howard’s journey to community work wasn’t straightforward. After building a successful career, he didn’t think much about the struggles of others, until semi-retirement gave him the time to reflect.

He realised many people around him, including family and friends, faced mental health and substance challenges he had once overlooked.

Searching online for ways to learn more, Howard discovered TAFE Queensland’s Community Services courses at the Southport campus on the Gold Coast.

“I had no intention of going beyond the Certificate III, but the journey was so rewarding, I had to continue to Certificate IV,” he said.

He credits the teachers for their patience and guidance.

“They are incredibly knowledgeable and generous with their time. Their support has been life-changing,” said Howard.

“At TAFE, there’s no such thing as a dumb question. Everything is open for discussion, and the teachers will support you.”

However, it was the real-world practical experience that was crucial for Howard.

His placement at Sunnyside Australia and the Gold Coast Clubhouse not only gave him firsthand insight into participants’ challenges but also led to his new job as a Support Worker.

And after decades of success in business, Howard says he’s finally found work that truly matters.

“I feel like I’m finally contributing to something meaningful,” he reflects. “And that’s a feeling you don’t outgrow.”
