Jeremy embraces the unexpected with TAFE Queensland

When Jeremy Markey first stepped into his leadership course at TAFE Queensland, he wasn’t sure what to expect.

Having always learned on the job, formal study was a leap into the unknown. But what started with apprehension soon turned into a year of personal growth, new friendships, and moments he will treasure forever.

“They said this course would prepare us for the real world… but I still don’t know how to fix a photocopier,” Jeremy said.

Despite his initial nerves about returning to study, Jeremy quickly found that studying for the Diploma of Leadership and Management (BSB50420) was a high-level qualification that gave him the skills to lead and excel as a manager.

This course equipped Jeremy with team leadership, strategic planning, and operational management skills while providing practical expertise in leading teams, improving workplace performance, and using emotional intelligence to drive positive outcomes.

Guided by industry-experienced professional teachers, Jeremy received mentorship and insights into applying these skills in real-world settings.

“There were the late nights spent studying, the last-minute assignment submissions, and, of course, the moments when we questioned all our life choices,” Jeremy continued.

“But there were also the small victories - the friendships we built, the moments we helped each other understand difficult concepts, and the times we just shared a joke and a smile.”

Jeremy’s most significant takeaway from studying with TAFE Queensland was embracing the unexpected.

“Sometimes, things won’t go as planned. Sometimes, you’ll feel like you have no idea what you’re doing. And that’s okay. Because growth happens in those moments of uncertainty,” he said.

The practical, hands-on approach allowed Jeremy to build on his existing skills while gaining new insights from his teachers, positioning them well to work in an industry-leading company with a statewide portfolio.

Jeremy is excited about the future and knows that the skills and confidence he gained through his studies will continue to propel him forward.

“To my classmates, thank you for the memories, the support, and the laughs. We made it! And to our incredible faculty, thank you for your patience, guidance, and for challenging us to improve,” he concluded.

Jeremy is now well-prepared to manage teams across various departments and pursue further studies to deepen his expertise.

He now looks forward to studying for the Diploma of Social Media Marketing (10904NAT) at TAFE Queensland to help him in other business areas.

As Jeremy and his fellow graduates step into their next adventures, they do so knowing that whatever comes their way, they can.
