Keegan swaps construction sites for cloud computing

After years of working on building sites, Keegan Hague swapped his steel caps for servers, launching his Information Technology (IT) career with TAFE Queensland.

Drawn to the dynamic world of IT, he prepared to leap into a new industry, starting with a Certificate III in Information Technology (ICT30120) at TAFE Queensland. This experience sparked something inside him.

Motivated by a growing interest in how networks operate and the constant variety of challenges in the IT world, Keegan enrolled in the Diploma of Information Technology (Advanced Networking and Cloud Engineering) (ICT50220-NWKCLD).

“There are no two jobs the same in IT, and every issue presents unique challenges. That constant variety and problem-solving appealed to me,” said Keegan.

Keegan’s decision to continue was easy, having already studied with TAFE Queensland, he knew the quality of education was high, the South Bank campus was well-resourced with industry-standard equipment, and the teachers were supportive.

However, the hands-on nature of the course made the most significant impact, leaving him with a positive impression.

“TAFE balances theory and practice perfectly. We had theory-based units to build our understanding, then put it into practice with physical routers and switches in computer labs.”

“That kind of hands-on experience builds confidence in a way you can’t get from textbooks alone,” he said.

Keegan found value in the support he received from his teachers, with Robert McKenzie standing out for his practical teaching style and willingness to go the extra mile for students.

“Rob didn’t just give us answers - he guided us through the troubleshooting process. It taught me to think through problems, not just solve them,” explained Keegan.

This support extended beyond the classroom with Rob introducing Keegan to a TAFE Queensland IT graduate whose company was looking for talent.

That connection led directly to Keegan’s current job as a Service Desk Analyst, which he secured while still completing the course.

“The system admin content in my first semester prepared me well. When I started my role, I managed user permissions and applied what I’d learned in real-world situations. It was a seamless transition from study to work,” he explained.

Keegan’s learning experience wasn’t just about technical skills. He also developed valuable soft skills, like communication and teamwork, which he uses daily in the workplace.

He credits these as essential to technical knowledge, helping him collaborate with others and navigate professional environments.

His talents also shone in competition, winning gold medals in the Cisco Networking Challenge and a gold medal for WorldSkills Australia Regional in 2024 in the Networking and System Admin category.

“Both were closed-book, practical exams that tested how well I understood the material. Winning boosted my confidence and confirmed I was on the right path,” Keegan explained.

Since completing his courses with TAFE Queensland, Keegan’s confidence in his technical abilities has grown immensely.

Coming from a non-technical background, he feels equipped to tackle complex networking problems and work independently in the industry.

His long-term ambition is to start his own IT business, but he would be just as satisfied continuing his system administrator journey.

For anyone considering studying for a similar career in information technology, Keegan offers advice based on his personal experience.

“Take a leap of faith and trust you’ll reap what you sow. Career changes are daunting, but the rewards will come if you’re interested in IT and willing to put in the effort. TAFE Queensland offers hands-on learning and industry connections that employers truly value,” he said.

Beyond the skills and job opportunities, Keegan says one of the most rewarding aspects of his studies has been the friendships he’s formed.

“Making friends with people who share your passion creates such a supportive environment. You could end up working with or even launching a business alongside these people,” said Keegan.

Now with nationally recognised qualifications, industry experience and a growing professional network, Keegan has a strong foundation for the IT career he wants, and it all started with TAFE Queensland.
