TAFE Queensland gave her the tools. A client gave her clarity
“You’re the first person who’s treated me like I wasn’t broken.” - Isobelle Fawkes will never forget those words.
This wasn't just feedback from a client; it was a turning point. A reminder that she was exactly where she was meant to be.
But that moment didn’t come easy.
Not so long ago, Isobelle was in retail management, leading teams and working long hours in a career that didn’t align with her heart.
“People have always opened up to me,” said Isobell.
“I knew I had something more to offer... but I also had bills to pay and responsibilities. Going back to study felt impossible.”
Until it didn’t.
Isobelle enrolled at TAFE Queensland’s Southport campus, signing up for two diplomas, Mental Health and Counselling. She studied by night, worked by day.
There were moments she wasn’t sure she’d make it through. But then came a $5,000 TAFE Queensland Scholarship, an unexpected lifeline.
“It wasn’t just financial support, it was emotional. It reminded me that someone believed in me, even when I was exhausted,” said Isobelle.
When a competitive work placement opportunity opened at Drug Arm, a support organisation for people impacted by alcohol and drug issues, Isobelle went for it. Despite the program traditionally favouring university students, she was selected.
“My training at TAFE Queensland prepared me so well. I could speak to theory, practice real-world skills, and show up with deep empathy,” she said.
“I wasn’t ‘just studying’ anymore, I was out in the field, helping people.”
And then came that client and the words that stopped her cold: “You’re the first person who’s ever treated me like I wasn’t broken.”
“That sealed it for me,” said Isobell.
“It reminded me that sometimes the most powerful thing we can do is help someone see their own worth again.”
Isobelle said TAFE Queensland gave her more than just an education, it gave her confidence and a sense of belonging. The teachers didn’t just teach; they understood her life, respected her journey, and made space for it.
“They saw how hard I was trying and they never made me feel like I had to choose between study and real life. That kind of support carries you through the hardest days,” she said.
To others who are thinking of a career change, Isobelle said TAFE Queensland provides incredible support, strong resources, and understanding teachers who walk alongside you.
“Don’t wait for everything to be perfect, just start. Even if it’s part-time, even if you’re working, it’s possible,” she said.
“You won’t just grow professionally, you’ll grow as a person.”
TAFE Queensland is now accepting 2026 Scholarship applications, with 100 scholarships valued at $5,000 each. Applications close 30 September 2025.
