TAFE Queensland the perfect blend for Zylah

Zylah has found TAFE Queensland to have the perfect blend of the latest technology and traditional equipment and techniques to give her a well-rounded apprenticeship experience.

Zylah Thelan is nearing completion of her electrical and instrumentation dual-trade apprenticeship, and says TAFE Queensland offered the perfect blend of technology for her industry.

Zylah praises the state’s largest training provider for its ability to provide comprehensive, hands-on training on the latest instrumentation equipment and technology while also ensuring apprentices learn more traditional techniques and systems – an important skillset for budding tradespeople who want to have a wide range of career opportunities.

“Something TAFE Queensland does really well is focus on the latest technology but also make sure we know how to use the other, more traditional equipment like pneumatic instruments,” Ms Thelan said.

“That was really helpful when I went to work at a different site, where the equipment is a bit older than what I’ve seen at sites near Roma. I feel prepared from TAFE for everything I’ll encounter in my career now.”

“I’ve done training on the Eagle Farm campus in the older building and now in the new facility, which is great. Everything is top quality and it’s a nice place to come for training.”

Zylah loves her trade career and says TAFE at School training was instrumental for her in choosing what career to pursue.

“I got to do Trade Tasters and then a pre-apprenticeship course in electrical through TAFE at School and getting that experience and taste of the industry let me know I definitely wanted to do this apprenticeship.”

“I’d tell anyone in school or looking at a career to do those entry-level courses to get a taste of what it’s like in the industries they’re thinking about, it means you can choose before committing to an apprenticeship.”

“I like that my job is challenging, it’s interesting, and there’s always more than one way to do things. There are so many technical parts to what we do.”

“My teacher Glen is great at helping us study the technical theory aspects of our trade, making sure we start each morning at TAFE with some revision of the day before to make sure we are ready to move on. I then use my Friday afternoons to do my own study too.”

Outside of work Zylah loves to travel, with America, Bali, and New Zealand some of her favourite places to visit. She says her Fly In Fly Out (FIFO) work affords her to opportunity to do much more travel than a regular job.

“I love getting to switch off for two weeks when I’m at home or to go travelling. It’s my favourite thing to do, and if I didn’t have a FIFO job, I would have less chance to do that,” she said.
