Travel and Tourism students take on Cruise360
Travel and Tourism students recently swapped the classroom for the industry spotlight, volunteering at this year’s Cruise360 Australasia conference in Brisbane.
The sold-out event, hosted by Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), brought together more than 850 delegates for the largest cruise industry gathering ever held in the region.
For the Diploma of Travel and Tourism (SIT50122) students, it was a unique opportunity to put their training into action while immersing themselves in the future of global cruising.
Across two busy days, the students entered various roles, showcasing their professionalism and adaptability.
They welcomed delegates at registration, guided and seated guests, managed cloakroom services, packed delegate bags, restocked trade show supplies, and supported event activations like CLIA’s photobooth.
These responsibilities allowed them to demonstrate the customer service, organisation, and communication skills they’ve developed throughout their studies, which are essential for success in the fast-paced tourism industry.
Beyond their volunteer duties, students gained invaluable exposure to the inner workings of one of Australasia’s premier travel and tourism events.
They witnessed keynote addresses, industry panels, and discussions on global trends, expedition cruising, luxury markets, and emerging opportunities among new generations of travellers.
The conference gave the students a front-row view of the industry they are preparing to join, and they experienced firsthand how industry leaders collaborate, innovate, and respond to the market's evolving needs.
Travel and Tourism teacher Cheryleigh Lazarus said the students embraced the opportunity enthusiastically and professionally, with their efforts not going unnoticed, with CLIA’s Membership and Events team praising their contribution.
“The Diploma students were absolutely fabulous – the students are some of the best we have ever had at our CLIA events.”
Volunteering at Cruise360 gave the students more than just practical experience - it offered a glimpse into their future careers.
The event highlighted TAFE Queensland’s strength in connecting students with industry, providing access to expert teachers, and preparing graduates to be job-ready.
