TAFE Queensland to lead new TAFE Centre of Excellence Construction Tech

As a leader in skills development and training, TAFE Queensland has been chosen to spearhead a third national TAFE Centre of Excellence focusing on construction.

The TAFE Centre of Excellence Construction Tech will build innovation in vocational education and training (VET) to deliver construction workers needed for housing, infrastructure projects and the 2032 Olympic Games.

Delivered under the National Skills Agreement, the Centre will operate as a statewide initiative across TAFE Queensland campuses and complements the Queensland Government’s commitment to build new training facilities in Caloundra and Moreton Bay.

More than 1.3 million people work in construction across Australia, in a range of entry-level and management roles, extending across carpentry, plumbing, electrical, painting, tiling, stonemasonry, and sustainable energy – just to name a few.

Construction is the biggest user of apprenticeships and traineeships of any industry and strong job growth to 1.41 million workers is predicted by 2033.

Despite strong job prospects, several construction occupations are facing national shortages, and attracting new and diverse workers into the industry is essential to meet demand.

With a strong focus on small to medium enterprises, the Centre will collaborate with industry and advance applied research opportunities to support workforce growth and skilling.

The Centre will improve entry pathways into construction careers and promote diversity and inclusion through accessible training opportunities, particularly for women and mid-career workers transitioning into the industry.

Digital skills are now a critical foundation for modern construction methods, and the Centre will strengthen the industry's digital literacy and technological capability to leverage advanced and emerging technologies.

The Centre also aims to integrate VET with higher education to enhance student outcomes and support labour mobility through skills recognition.

By leading the Centre, TAFE Queensland is proud to continue shaping the future of VET, delivering a skilled and diverse construction workforce ready to meet the challenges of tomorrow.

The TAFE Centre of Excellence Construction Tech is a joint initiative between the Australian and Queensland Governments. It’s the third of its kind to be led by TAFE Queensland which also spearheads the TAFE Centre of Excellence Clean Energy Batteries and the TAFE Centre of Excellence Health Care and Support.
