Alex goes from curiosity to future building designer

When Alex Pilkington enrolled in TAFE Queensland, he had no background in construction, no experience using Revit, and only a limited understanding of building codes and compliance.

Six months later, he stood on stage as Graduate of the Year for the Class of 2025, with a Certificate IV in Residential Drafting (CPP40121).

For someone who describes himself as extremely introverted - and who had spent the previous six years studying online - stepping into a face-to-face technical course was a significant leap.

“I can’t say I ever expected to be standing here today. Had it not been for the belief and encouragement of my peers, parents and educators, I might very well have chosen to decline this honour politely,” Alex said.

Alex began the course with more questions than answers, and he wasn’t afraid to ask them, as he began learning from the ground up.

“I remember staying back until the very last minute on Tuesdays, always asking questions, possibly annoyingly so, and turning up to every studio session, sometimes to work and sometimes simply to get help.”

Through supervised drafting projects, 3D modelling and the complexities of construction legislation, he gradually built confidence alongside technical capability.

“In moments of confusion, we often looked to each other for support, sometimes even banging our heads together, hoping for a spark,” continued Alex.

“But through the challenges, the shared struggle, and a lot of persistence, we’ve made it here.”

More importantly, Alex discovered something beyond drafting skills.

“I’ve learned that there are no stupid questions, and that asking for help is not a weakness.”

The Certificate IV in Residential Drafting (CPP40121) is designed to equip students with work-ready skills to enter the building design industry.

Students learn to produce drawings and documentation for Class 1 and 10 buildings using CAD software, while developing knowledge of construction materials, building methods, legislation and compliance requirements.

“In just six months at TAFE Queensland, I can confidently say I’ve been equipped with work-ready skills to enter the industry,” Alex said.

He credits much of that growth to the guidance of his teachers, particularly Elaine Silver, and the support of his classmates.

“Any success I’ve had is thanks to the incredible educators and the amazing peers who supported me along the way.”

Rather than closing the book on study, Alex is already planning his next step and will continue into the Diploma of Building Design (CPP50921) at TAFE Queensland.

The diploma builds advanced skills in residential and small-scale commercial building design, helping graduates meet some of the technical requirements for applying for Low Rise or Medium Rise Building Design licences.

“I’m really looking forward to continuing with the Diploma of Building Design. I can’t wait to see many familiar faces again, ready to tackle new challenges with the same determination that got us through the first time,” he said.

As he reflected on his time at TAFE Queensland, Alex’s message was grounded in gratitude.

“I’d like to extend my sincere thanks to everyone who made this possible - to the educators and staff who offered constant support and guidance, to my parents for their unwavering support, and to my peers whose encouragement and kindness shaped these past six months,” Alex concluded.

From hesitant beginner to confident graduate, Alex’s journey is proof that growth often begins with a simple question and the courage to ask it.
