First Certificate III live production intake celebrates industry success
The first cohort of TAFE Queensland’s inaugural Certificate III in Live Production and Technical Services (CUA30425) has just completed their course, marking a successful milestone for a program developed in response to urgent industry skills needs.
The qualification was developed over the last 18 months, following consultation with Qld Ballet and Metro Arts, who highlighted the current skills shortages in the Live Production industry and the urgent need for targeted training.
This exciting new 6-month course began in January 2026 with a small cohort of enthusiastic students eager to enter the theatre, festivals and events industry.
The students developed skills and knowledge across a range of technical areas, live audio, audio editing, lighting, vision systems, costume maintenance and box office operations.Along with access to experienced teachers and great facilities at TAFE Queensland, they were also lucky to have a range of opportunities during their course, facilitated by their teachers’ industry contacts. This included:
- A tour backstage of the MJ Musical at QPAC
- Industry guest speakers presenting in class from QPAC, Judith Wright Centre, Fortitude Music Hall, Princess Theatre and Chameleon Lighting
- Students gained real-world experience through work placements with Brisbane Arts Theatre, hosted at TAFE Queensland's South Bank campus.
- Employment and work experience opportunities with the Brisbane Festival, Princess Theatre and Brisbane Convention Centre
- Work experience on shows “My Hamster is a Pirate” and “Singing in the Rain” for Brisbane Arts Theatre
- Lighting work experience for artists such as Emma Memma, Pop Culture Parenting and Mental as Anything
- Multi-cam set up and live vision switching of a University of Canberra play
Most recently, teacher Toby Loveland supported graduate Kalani Maxwell to secure a four-week internship with Griffith University’s music theatre department, working on its production of "& Juliet".
Kalani will join the sound team, led by the leading sound designer, Steve Thornely.
In addition to assisting with the sound production bump-in, she will be fitting radio mics and working as a mic tech throughout the season.
The delivery of the new course has been a resounding success, and the team intends to build on the established networks to further grow the Certificate III in Live Production and Technical Services (CUA30425) and provide more skilled graduates for the industry.
There are also study pathways available for students who wish to continue their studies and specialise in key areas of audio and lighting, vision and costume maintenance.
