From student to supervisor: Kaylee’s full-circle journey

The gym Kaylee Cook now manages is the very place where her journey into the fitness industry first began.

Kaylee first walked into TQ Fitness, the onsite gym at TAFE Queensland’s Robina campus, as a student, enrolled in a Certificate III in Fitness (SIS3032) and then a Certificate IV in Fitness (SIS40221).

There, she honed her knowledge and skills, developing a strong foundation in health, exercise programming and client coaching.

“I was motivated to pursue this path because fitness has always been a big part of my life. I saw how much it can positively impact both physical and mental health, and I wanted to help others experience that as well,” explained Kaylee.

“Being able to support people in reaching their goals and feeling more confident is what drives me every day.”

Her passion for the industry left a lasting impact. Not long after graduating, Kaylee returned to TQ Fitness - this time stepping in as a supervisor and personal trainer, ready to share her expertise with the local community.

“In this position, I’m able to apply what I learned at TAFE Queensland while continuing to grow professionally by supporting clients, managing daily gym operations, and helping people achieve their fitness goals,” she said.

She says the hands-on learning she received at TAFE Queensland has been instrumental in preparing her for the industry, giving her the practical skills and confidence to thrive in her role.

“Working with real clients and practicing coaching in a supportive environment helped me build confidence and find my passion for personal training, which prepared me for stepping into a real gym environment,” said Kayle

Her advice for anyone wanting to join the fitness industry – lean into every opportunity.

“Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and practice your coaching skills, because that’s what really builds confidence. Also be patient with yourself, everyone starts somewhere. If you’re passionate and stick with it, you can definitely build a successful career in the fitness industry.”
